INSIDE SLANT

A lack of progress after a 5-1 start turned into a 7-5 finish in 2004 led Jeff Bower to change offensive coordinators. Meanwhile, the continued success of the defense forced him to hire a new defensive coordinator after Tyrone Nix left for South Carolina.

Southern Miss also finds itself trying to figure out a new Conference USA without Louisville, Cincinnati, TCU, USF and Army, and replaced by UTEP, Rice, SMU, Tulsa, Marshall and UCF.

One thing did not change, however. The Golden Eagles still expect to contend for championships and enter the 2005 season as the most popular pick to win the new C-USA Eastern Division title.

SUMMARY: The Golden Eagles return six offensive starters and seven defensive. but it's the new starters and key backups that will go a long way toward determining the success of this team, especially when it comes to running the ball and stopping the run. If the Golden Eagles can improve up front on both sides of the ball they'll be hard to beat in the C-USA East.
