This was found in the bathroom during the flight. Plane made an emergency landing in Kenya I believe.

All 459 passengers and 13 crew were escorted safely off the aircraft, while the bomb was taken by the Kenyan navy to be detonated safely away from the airport.

Kenyan bomb experts have been examining the device since the plane landed, while passengers have been taken to nearby hotels. The security services have cordoned off the airport and flights have been suspended.

Almost doesn't matter if it were real or fake. A fake bomb could lead to devastating results in any number of ways (panic, quick landing in bad conditions, etc.) Planting a fake should get them 30 years.

Also could be a test run.

It's a clock.

The underlying problem is that much of the world has no idea on how to conduct airport security, the US and France included. If we really wanted to improve upon it I would privatize the TSA for starters, but if we have to work with them then I'd make the following changes (most modeled after suggestions from the former head of security at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, which I've been to).

1. End TSA-self regulation. The TSA is a security agency that regulates itself, and anything that makes its own rules is a disaster waiting to happen. Once you disperse regulatory authority, their first priorities should be to increase security force drills (Ben Gurion does seven per day, US airports do two per year) and undergo efforts to increase retention rates (it’s common for an entire security team to be replaced each year) because right now you have a lot of underachieving idiots working who don't know squat about security in their short time there.
2. Stop treating every traveler the same by spending all your time on luggage. The TSA does because of the stupid idea that everything should be fair. Security needs to be done due to risk, and to check risk that you don't check luggage, you check people. Not racial profiling, that's a product of poor training. People with bombs strapped to their body behave in similar ways, and you pick up on that with the next step.
3. Check intent through interview-based screenings. A person with something to hide will cast their eyes away much more quickly in such a situation. Israel interviews every traveler several times, but they don’t care why you're there. They’re paying attention to your behavior. Obviously, checking for intent by looking at anxiety is going to result in false positives. Lots of people are having a stressful day or hate flying, but it's easy to sort out an acrophobic 8-year old from someone planning to commit mass murder.
4. Ringed security. Security should happen in rings so different teams can check each other's work and make sure no terrorists slip through. All it takes is a lapse of concentration from one worker and they slip through. But thanks to the layout of modern airports, the TSA packs hundreds of travelers in cramped lines for terrorists to potentially inflict harm on, before anyone has been screened. The worst is picking up luggage, when you pick someone up from a flight there's no scrutiny around who walks in there.
5. Share intelligence. This goes way beyond airport security, but the fact that the CIA, FBI, and NSA (not that the latter should exist) all have different databases is unacceptable. Share information and invest in direct lines of communication between domestic and international airports, right now they notify each other via fax.
6. Redesign the airports. Glass looks lovely and it saves a lot on lighting, but putting a lot of it in a terminal makes most of them a build-your-own shrapnel bomb kit. But what happens if the TSA finds a bomb? In Israel, security checks are done in small, blast-proof areas with a few people in it at a time. If there is a bomb they only have to evacuate one room, not an entire terminal. If you made a fake bomb of Play-Doh and wires, then hid it in your checked bags, they'd shut down the entire terminal. So you don't need to explode anything, just take these bags into 20 airports around the country and you'll close them all for days.
