Whats going on with the Mid_South Coliseum?...
Haven't heard much on the matter lately....They should be thinking outside the box on this one.....Not that thye are but they should have U of M and City get together with SHC/ FedEx/ AutoZone/ and Some of the new Startup Companies of Memphis becoming a very Edgiest City in technology and Tear down Mid-South Coliseum and In its place build a 1 Billion plus NEW Football Stadium/ Convention Center that could also replace Cook Convention center which is old and outdated.....Make it like the one in Atlanta or St. Louis.....Have FedEx and AutoZone and a few other Corps help out if you could and make it top of the line.....I know they won't but they should.....No Limits...The World Is Ours Memphis....

the no-compete clause has rendered the MSC useless...that's why the Landers Center in Southaven has prospered (it's across state lines)

RE: Whats going on with the Mid_South Coliseum?...
Good to know Bluto..I think it would be perfect if they ever got SMART and built a NEW Football Stadium/Convention center there in the 1 Billion plus range like most cities are doing right now....We have alot of New Startup Companies in Memphis and coming to Memphis and that would be ideal for a NEW Football Stadium and a OLD outdated Cook convention center...You could Make it Tigers all the way, and would give the CITY their NEW convention center....But would need to Work Together on it though if something like that were ever to happen....No Limits....The World Is Ours Memphis....

The new mayor will be addressing the Coliseum, and hopefully, he will see the great value in repurposing it for a Midtown concert venue so we can all stop going to corrupt Southaven to see concerts.

It would be cheaper to renovate it than tear it down. There has been a ton of work done by architects, urban planners, Midtown and Coliseum activists, including all the experts who gathered ideas at the charette, the Urban Land Institute national committee, who then gave a detailed report on possibilities for the Coliseum and the entire Fairgrounds area.

This chapter is a long way from being written, so don't get your hopes up on having the Coliseum torn down. The City would have you believe it is in horrible shape, but they won't allow anyone in to assess it. It is in good shape, actually.

But we still need to figure out a way to build a State of the art NEW convention center to replace the OLD and Outdated Cook Convention Center....Doesn't everyone agree on that much?...And Fairgrounds would be perfect for it....No Limits....The World Is Ours Memphis....

We tend to repeat the same lines over and over enough to where we actually believe them. Here's an article from the Summer that factually explains the MSC and the circumstances that closed it. If anyone can't get to it I'll cut and paste some of it for you.

There is already a plan in place for major renovation and massive expansion of the convention center. It was discussed back in the summer sometime. If I find article, I will post.

the 50-55 million dollar renovation of Cook Convention Center is a go...the grand 900 million dollar new convention center will probably never happen IMHO

Nothing in the agreement keeps the MSC from being used at full capacity. The provision ONLY requires that if the MSC wants to sign a show that the Fed-Ex Forum has the right of first refusal. If the forum does not want the show then it is free to go to the MSC.

Last projection is that it would cost $3 million MORE to tear down the MSC and replace it with a 5,000 seat multi purpose arena that it would take to renovate it and use it at it's full capacity.

Who in their right mind would want to build a convention center where there are no hotels room for miles.

RE: Whats going on with the Mid_South Coliseum?...
Well Sorry guys...I Like the 900 Million plus dollar plan to the Convention center up to the wolf river edge....I also hope thye tear down the Coliseum and that should a time ever come for a Future NEW Stadium that we can put a future New Stadium at the Fairgrounds....Also hope we could build A few Shops and Hotels and Entertainment district in there somehow in the future as well....I love everything our City of Memphis is doing RIGHT these days....I also Hope we can get One Beale Towers done too, and well as the Harahan Bridge project completed that goes well well with Beale Street landing....Once those are complete you got Beale Street landing, You would have the Harahan walking Bridge, Bass Pro at the Pyramid, Future One Beale Towers, A Furture NEW state of the arts Convention Center, along with Gibson, FedEx Forum, AutoZone Park and its really taking shape....Then with the Park Avenue Campus, New Upgrades to the LBS, and man things are really coming together and Me and the Wife love Seeing all that's going on with Memphis when we come back to town.....No Limits....The World Is Ours Memphis.....

You're correct. People like to spout off about the non compete clause but it's rarely been used......ever. It's not a factor at all concerning the Coliseum's demise. People that like to sling it around really aren't looking at the facts. Here's a paragraph from the CA article about the Coliseum from a few months back:

'Concerts? The music market is more diffuse now than it was 30 years ago and the Coliseum calendar had been reduced to a trickle even before FedExForum and its non-compete clause entered the equation. But there aren’t really that many concerts at the two North Mississippi venues, and I don’t think it’s at all reasonable to assume that all of them would be happening in Memphis if only the Coliseum were reborn. It seems like about half the major concerts across the state line are country concerts at Snowden Grove. Many of these are summer tours geared around outdoor venues. And all of them are pursuing an audience more concentrated in the Mississippi suburbs than in Midtown Memphis. The rock, rap and R&B concerts that were once the Coliseum’s bread-and-butter? There are fewer of them now that would demand a venue of the Coliseum’s size-range, even if the non-compete were taken off the table. '
