Star Wars
A half dozen people have asked me this week if I'd like to go with them to see the new movie. They look genuinely offended when I tell them I haven't watched any of them and have no desire to start now.

I don't get the hype.

Star Wars
I know whenever I want to see a movie I make sure to wear a costume that makes seeing the movie impossible. I think I watched about 5 minutes of the one with the Ewoks when I was 8.

Taking my 8 year old tonight for the second go-round. It's incredible to see the wonder it brings to a kid (and gives me an excuse to see it again!).

RE: Star Wars
First 3 were really good, last 3 sucked. Saw Star Wars at a small cinema in Westwood maybe Glenway Ave? when I was a kid.
After the movie my friend told me that "I am going to be a pilot". Fast forward to 83', he accepted a ROTC Navy Scholly
to Boston U. On he went to fly jets and helos for the Navy. Guessing he is retired in San Diego somewhere.

Hey Ash. Yes, indeed. I live in NoPo, quite close to the University of Portland. Moved out here from Colorado a few years back. Were you working in athletics? Clark College?

SuperFly - I grew up in Westwood and saw the original in 1977 at that same theatre (I was five and don't recall the theatre). The last three did suck. This one is good. I definitely recommend it if you enjoyed the first three.

RE: Star Wars
I'm actually a pretty big star wars fan. I was overall happy with the new film. The special effects were awesome. I will say that there were a number of things in the film that had me scratching my head. I don't want to give any spoilers so I'll just say that my biggest gripe was the lack of creativity with the plot. Bad guys build a huge battlestation -> it threatens the good guys -> good guys blow up battle station. That's been the plot for three star wars movies now. Can't we think up something new? I just feel like Abrams played it safe with the plot.

I actually had a few years where I didn't finish my degree stupidly with only one year left. My wife is from out there and so we lived there. I was just in the area for Thanksgiving and met with some folks from PSU to network and talk to them about their Viking Pavilion project. That is pretty impressive for a school at their level. $46,000,000 project will be really nice for their basketball program.

I actually thought the planet weapon made sense. If the remnants of the Empire are wanting to build another weapon even better than the death star then it only makes sense to scale up. Though I guess they could have went the 'Kyp Durron' route and built a sun crusher.

My problem with the weapon was the fact that the political climate somehow allowed yet another Evil power to develop the resources to do the exact same thing they did 30 years prior. I mean doesn't anyone in Star Wars learn from History? They act like Luke is some mythical legend when his heroics were relatively recent.

Great eye candy. But true to form the story lines are a little silly.

Bring on Darth Jar Jar.

Space is a BIIIIG place...if you're looking at it in physical real space, we're not even sure how many planets are in the next solar system.

RE: Star Wars
Finally decided to watch it, I have to say, it was pretty bad.
Firstly, every time it appears someone dies a heroic death, they come back later. The pilot that helps "Finn" the main protagonist escape, you think he dies in the sand, only to have him come back later. Then toward the end, Finn dies taking on the main villain, despite having no light saber training; he puts up an admirable effort and falls...Oh, except he didn't! He's there at the end, hooked up to a machine!
It would be like if Bambi's mother came back at the end. Sure, we don't like to see bad things happen, but the deaths were a large part of the story, and you completely crapped all over them. You took any mood or sincerity and turned it to garbage.
And of course, the light sabers can't kill anybody, but for some reason, Han Solo get's poked by one and falls immediately dead. Which by the way, brought on the best acting in the film. I refer of course, to where chewy in a rage starts shooting at everybody. Like he's about to go out in a blaze of glory, which demonstrates just how wooden the rest of the cast was. He had more emotion in a Chewbacca costume than the rest of the cast!
The comedic gags during the ship chase, with the new droid were awful too. You cut away to a robot, making noises and "reacting" as filler. That's pretty low. If I told you, I wanted to do a sequel to a film based in our time and I panned to a toaster for reaction, you'd think I was retarded but for some reason JJ Abrams gets a pass. Add to that, the big bad weapon was yet another death star and I can't for the life of me figure out the hype.

VisuAlly entertaining formulaic rehash of the first couple releases.

Yeah they bring back the exact same Death Star. Except BIGGER!! That can be attacked and destroyed by the exact same canyon type fighter runs. I mean seriously.

RE: Star Wars
Ordered the Blue Ray - DVD - Digital combo on Amazon yesterday. Was going to just order it on Amazon Video, but I read in the reviews that they just made it one long 4 hour video instead of breaking out the extra content.

Anyone interested in why Kylo Ren slams his helmet into a bucket of ashes before interrogating Rey?
