RE: Star Wars
I second Dune.

I accept Star Wars as great eye candy but the writing and acting are generally awful. Its like its part of the corny schtick.

Dug this thread back up now that opening weekend is over.

Opinions?

I loved it. Pretty dark and gritty. Ended the way it should have. I think it adds weight to the stakes of A New Hope, not that ANH needed any help or anything.

I seem to be in the minority, but I thought it was good but far from great. The action scenes were great, maybe the best I've seen in a Star Wars movie. The ending was an awesome transition into Ep IV. But I thought the first half of the movie was horribly clunky and slow. And some of the dialogue was just terrible. I also felt that the directing was lacking. This was a strong cast but too many of the performances seemed flat to me.

It's Star Wars. It's eye candy. You're not there to watch the storyline or the acting.

The family and I are doing the avoid extended family holiday this year and on Christmas afternoon we're doing an Indian buffet and then going to check this out. Looking forward to it.

I am pretty much in the same camp. The only character in the movie I found myself having any connection to was the droid (K2SO). The monk/questionable Jedi character had potential but they needed to do a little more. The two main characters in the film (Jyn and Cassian) did nothing for me.

RE: Star Wars
I really enjoyed the movie as well. I actually really liked the main, female protagonist (jyn), but really never connected with Cassian. That said I enjoyed the droid and some of the other smaller roles (the pilot, the blind man and his partner etc.). The action sequences were great.

SPOILERS BELOW

I liked the setup with the Death Star creator being against it and building a flaw into the design. I thought it was a good retcon for the unbelievability of the flaw in A New Hope and increased the stakes of the movie. I thought the end was appropriately grim and enjoyed the idea of the sacrifice these people made... It's a Star Wars movie, it wasn't going to be perfect, but I thought it got a lot right.

I really enjoyed the movie as well. I want to see it a second time. bearcatmark is right on point with the flaw being purposely planted. This is awesome. I hated that I had to explain to a few non-SW geeks why the main characters all had to die. Seemed obvious to me but still. I wish we could have seen more of Bail (sp?) Organa though.Maybe that is for another movie.

Still annoyed Disney canned the EU.

For about 3 minutes at the End, this movie made up for a ton of Ill Will. Darth Vader went from being that whiney brat Anakin, to a total BadAss again !

I was actually okay with them ditching the EU. There was some wonky and weird stuff out there. It seems they are willing to bring back old things from the EU and re-canonize some of the better things, like the new Thrawn book.

To the points of others, the acting may not always be the best, though I have no major gripes over the latest two movies, but Star Wars is most definitely about the storytelling. And I think R1 adds to the rich universe that's been built. I don't go see SW because it's pretty, I go because of the stories being told.

I just hated it because it meant probably a thousand+ hours of reading was thrown out the window. Plus I was looking forward to the SotJ book(s).

I haven't been keeping up lately but a new Thrawn book is coming?! Sign me up!

It was refreshing to get out of a Skywalker storyline. Jyn>Katniss. Re-programmed imperial droid had everyone at the Brew-n-View lol. Didn't even see Force Awakens, but I wanted to see this one. Very good war movie. Gives some meaning to Leia's line in ANH "Many good people died to get these plans".

Nope. Wrong person, wrong movie.

RE: Star Wars
All you nerds and your Star Wars EU talk.... well let me join in.

Never was a big fan, tried to read a few earlier. (Shadows of the Empire, Truce at Bakura, Jedi Academy). Several talked about how good the Admiral Thrawn Trilogy was and when I saw it available on MP3 through the library I started listening. I highly recommend this. I drive about and hour and half everyday (sometimes more depending on where court is) so audiobooks are great for me and these are really well done. The voices sound like the characters, the new voices are cool and distinct, there's a musical score and sound effects. Totally different audiobook experience from anything I've listened to. I really enjoyed Thrawn, Pellian, Mara Jade and Tallen Card.... great additions. Fun series.

I liked Rogue One, but I wasn't too impressed by some of the special effects. Give me the original, non-updated effects from the original trilogy any day. Models and other ILM "movie magic" from Star Wars in 1977 STILL beat the best CGI of 2016. Bringing Grand Moff Tarkin back to life (RIP Peter Cushing) was partially impressive... a still shot of him would be indistinguishable from the real Peter Cushing, but his motion was just too smooth which gave it away as CGI. I know I sound picky, but the only CGI I thought was actually BAD was that for the Mon Calamari ship captain (maybe a younger Admiral Ackbar?). He looked pathetic compared to the Admiral Ackbar of Return of the Jedi. Overall, very entertaining movie.

Nah, just misunderstood. Understand different movie. Was comparing female action leads that's all.

There are some real contenders elsewhere in the SW universe...
