But again, when the bulk of the main page of threads were these dumb*** "What if..." threads, they become hard to ignore and turn many people away from the boards all together.

*logs on, sees a page of stupid threads, moves on.* It doesn't serve anyone.

That works for an occasional satirical thread.

But the explosion of "What is the Big12 raided ..." and "Should conference X lure Y" threads needed to be stopped.
