Philly mayor again takes shots at Eagles over stadium
http://www.philly.com/philly/business/20...ement.html

Looks like he is back to bashing the Eagles. At this point he is acting more like Joe Rowhouse than a mayor.

As a Temple fan I don't blame the Eagles for wanting to make a profit. I also don't blame them for Temple not having a stadium. We had the land and the plans back in 1998 but our own president backed out.
So here we are again in 2015 with less than an ideal stadium situation.

Incidentally, despite being stadium partners with the Eagles back then, the Big East cited our stadium as a key reason why we got booted. We were the third tenant behind the Eagles and Philies at the city owned Vet Stadium.

The good thing is that the mayor-elect has stated that at this point he is done with his criticism of the Eagles. He admits to having no power over them. But he still has issues with Temple and it's community relations.
This thing is starting to turn ugly. He will hold up all construction permits and zoning unless Temple comes to some type of agreement with the community.
In the end this means big payouts $$$ by Temple ..

long story short...

he doesn't want to spend on a temple stadium, but knows the eagles stadium situation is unfeasible

looks like he is trying to talk the linc into a respectable price and using media as a tactic

It's frustrating because there are so many benefits and factors to Temple building a stadium that have nothing to do with the price of the Linc

There's no city money involved. He did this so that he can say, "I tried but the Eagles won't budge" and so that the City Council has cover on this issue as well. It was mostly political theater though I think Kenney mistakenly thought there was an outside chance he could broker a deal. As I wrote in another thread and as the mayor elect has said from the beginning this comes down to working out a deal that the City Council President can live with. Temple will move forward with stadium designs, traffic studies, etc. and at the same time they'll need to lay the ground work for dealing with Council and neighborhood opponents.

Not the full story! The Eagles didn't pay for the stadium completely with their own money, paid in full that is. The state and the city contributed. I wasn't asked as a Pennsylvania taxpayer if I wanted to contribute, where you?

Nothing p!$$ed me off more then being held blackmail by the two pro sports teams. Self fund your own me$$ then you have the right to do or say anything you want. One of many reasons I hated, and still hate, Ed Rendell!

Quote:In December 2000, City Council approved a two-stadium package for the Eagles and Phillies that totaled a bit more than $1 billion. The state contributed $170 million to that. The city's share was $394 million, which it raised partly through issuing bonds and a rental car tax. The Eagle's share of the deal amounted to $310 million of the estimated cost of the $395 million stadium. The city was to contribute an estimated $90 million toward operations and maintenance over the course of the Eagles 30-year lease with the city. Under that lease agreement, the Eagles can sublease the stadium for events such as Temple football and concerts.

^^ I hate welfare for billionaires but your boy Ridge signed off on the state appropriation. This was a bipartisan theft from taxpayers.

RE: Philly mayor again takes shots at Eagles over stadium
The strange thing is that Temple is no longer complaining about the Eagles. This new mayor is not up to date on what this stadium is all about.
It's about having the right sized stadium on Temple campus. It's about investing in Temple.
It's about creating a wonderful venue where alumni and families of students can gather to spend some time together.
It's about investing in the Temple neighborhood and drawing more retail businesses to the area to create a vibrant campus.

Temple has raised the money needed to make this stadium happen. The money issue no longer there for Temple. So what if the state chips in $20 million to help out. It would be money well spent.

Temple pays about $1 million in rent to the Eagles, who have told university officials they want $12 million up front and $2 million in annual rent for a new 30-year lease.

Eagles are obviously grandstanding and the new numbers would be negotiable (but at a higher rate than their current $1 Million per year deal), still, Temple would be wise to invest in their own stadium/property for a new stadium footprint that could last them generations vs paying Eagles owner Lurie another $40 Million - $60 Million just for rent.

Lurie=NE Patriot Fan, not a Philadelphia guy. It's a travesty.

Yes it is. It's all the worse that taxpayers are lining his pockets while his franchise that never wins championships explodes in value.

If you take public money as the Eagles did, then the mayor has the right to exert pressure.

Well, I guess we can't say never since then beat GB in 1960 and won in '48 and '49, but I get your point. Winning a championship when I was less then a year old is not something I remember as an Eagle fan. I wish they would just leave the city and end the misery.

True

It amazes me the ignorance of so many and the greed involved... No one ever said this would be easy, I do believe the hurdles wil be iron out eventually and Temple gets the new stadium, just keep pushing Owls.

Without greed from the Eagles...Temple may never get a stadium...as its the greed (increased asking price for 30 yr deal) that actually might help get Temple a new stadium.

If Eagles offered Temple a sweatheart deal....Temple may have less than a 1% chance at getting their own stadium...so in the meantime, thank the Eagles for helping "push" Temple to building their own.

RE: Philly mayor again takes shots at Eagles over stadium
The stadium will get done. The phase we are in now is entitled, " Determining the Acceptable Handouts to North Philly". This phase usually requires a few meetings to reach the acceptable amount. Then everybody smiles, shakes hands, the local news photo ops, etc. Then the next phase is " Philly Union Extortion Demands". Thats usually quick when the City Council (now onboard) promises the greedy unions plum city contracts. Then construction starts.

This course is called " Philly Sports Stadiums 101" I have been a part of it in the past, and seen it many times.
