Freshman guard Austin Grandstaff ( who was rated 50th best prospect last year among HSers) is transferring from OSU. He is from Rockwall. He is probably out of our league, but then many thought McGuffie was as well. He would be a tremendous asset to the team.

“I just feel like I need to do what is best for me,” he said. “All the coaches have been great to me, but I just feel like this isn’t the right fit.”
A well-regarded shooter out of Rockwell, Texas, Grandstaff was rated the No. 50 recruit in the nation and a four-star prospect by ESPN. But playing time has been more limited than Grandstaff had hoped, and he was typically was the third or fourth option off coach Thad Matta’s bench.
Grandstaff played nine minutes on Saturday in a loss at Connecticut after playing at least 12 minutes in the previous five games.

Grandstaff became a father last summer but said that wasn’t the primary reason for his decision.
“It’s a little bit of both,” he said. “I mean, I have things at home that I’m missing, but it’s more the basketball part of it.”
In 10 appearances, Grandstaff averaged 4.4 points, shooting 33.3 percent (12 of 36) on three-pointers while averaging 11.5 minutes of playing time. Matta had credited Grandstaff for his energy throughout the season but both said that his defense was a work in progress.

Grandstaff’s next move is uncertain. He said he’s going to look at some schools, decide before Christmas and transfer before next semester. His former AAU teammate Elijah Thomas also announced his decision to transfer from Texas A&M this week.

Grandstaff (6-5, 185) will play for (Plano) West next season and is currently participating in a heavy summer AAU season with Team Texas. Grandstaff started the last two seasons at Rockwall but transferred to Huntington Prep in West Virginia in December. After being the nation’s top-ranked team and playing with highly regarded Andrew Wiggins, Grandstaff told the dallasnews.com that Austin quickly got homesick and returned to Texas and enrolled at Plano West on Jan. 30.
