Quest for all yu-in edumulkated folk
Have a medical question. 40+ years ago i was very active in sports and between wrestling and football i ended up with a minor knee injury.

Over the years it began acting up on me. First it was just giving out every so often. The knee will give out and almost fall on my face. This went on for a while. Then i began having discomfort in it. Not really pain but discomfort. Like gravel grinding. But then something in it would pop and the discomfort goes away.

As many can tell my avatar i once drove race cars. I ended up in a hard crash which left me with an injured back. At the time i was under 200. My back injury limited my mobility. I ended up being able to work three days a week and then have to take off for a day to recover. My weight slowly began rising. Then it got to a point where i work two days and have to take off one. Then work one day and take off one to recover. All this time my weight continued to rise the days i had to rest after each day working increased. Which caused my weight continued to rise.

The vicious circle created a situation where i was forced to retire and take disability. Where increased the cycle.

Now I am at a point where the discomfort has became pain. From time to time i have a period where i feel excessive pain on the inner part of my left knee when i step down. Feels like bone against bone. Then at time i feel pain when i lift up the leg and it is hanging in the air. Again when something pops in their all the discomfort and pain goes away.

Do any of yu-ins edumulkated folk haves any idea what kind of damage may be inside my knee and what short of treatment other than knee replacement can relieve most of my problems.

Probably meniscus because that is the natural padding in your knee. When that is torn or worn, you get pain and restriction from the tear and eventually bone on bone.

I just had surgery for the second time on the same knee. First time was to repair a sports injury. The most recent surgery was to take care of wear and tear where they found more torn meniscus and arthritis in there. I am now down to bone on bone in that knee.

You probably should visit an ortho and get an MRI done so they can see what's going on in there. They will determine if surgery or physical therapy, or both, would be the best course.

Call Ortho-Memphis & get an appointment with Dr. Kenneth Weiss.

Somewhat similar problems to yours. Bone on bone for years caused by sports injuries earlier in life & continued wear from playing sports on into my 50s.

My left knee was bowed out which caused bulging discs in my back on side opposite that knee resulting in tremendous pain.

I went in for a Thursday night clinic visit.
I was examined by Dr Weiss who told me it was one of the worst knees he'd ever examined

He eventually did a total knee replacement & I'm totally pleased.

Know Weiss very well, referred me many patients.

Having a scope myself in the next 6 months from another doc friend from the same practice.

For the OP, it definitely sounds like a meniscus tear, and probably due to your other injuries...combined with arthritis.
