RE: Mayor Bell involved in altercation (fight)
Council president Austin gave an update a short time ago.

At the end of his update he said the city would continue fighting for us.

Ridiculous. The city is making a lot of progress in spite of the elected officials. If we could get some intelligent people in public office, we'd really be on the move.

Put them in a cage and settle it like men. For the city of Birmingham I believe it would be poetic if Uber was the official fight sponsor. Have the fight in Boutwell in ensure a sell out. Book It!

Let's have the fight at Boutwell sponsored by Uber. All proceeds go to city council Christmas bonus. Larry Langford as the special referee in a really elaborate referee uniform. Also get Don Seigleman to phone in and do play by play (Fight would have to be less than 15 minutes).

Whitmire reporting that Bell pulled Lundy's furnished car earlier due to it not being legal for those on the city council.

I think some of them are intelligent...maybe all of them. The problem is that many of them are short-sighted and/or greedy. Here are my two observations of Birmingham government:

1. To be a good public servant, you can't be overly self-serving. I'm not saying you can't help yourself professionally, but your focus MUST be on the job as a servant. Birmingham has a particularly bad problem with self-serving, greedy politicians (with some exceptions).

2. Birmingham officials need to take steps to entice cooperation from the suburbs. We need the Birmingham Metro area to feel responsible for improving the metro area TOGETHER. Stuff like today ruins hope of such cooperation. Who wants to be associated with stuff like that?

I just hope these guys can keep it together enough to keep from ruining UAB's positive momentum.

I would say that being incredibly unintelligent is a firm requirement for participating in public leadership for the City of Birmingham. Intelligent crooked politicians are at least smart enough to attempt to conceal their graft. Those in Birmingham are not.

I believe the same. I always chalked it up to a lot of politicians just presenting themselves in a certain way to pander to their respective bases. It's not nearly as polarizing on a local level, but it can definitely get as toxic.

I like Bell. I know that a lot of guys aren't exactly fond of a lot of stuff (his security, his trips, etc.), but I feel like he has been in front of efforts to better the city. Regardless, actually getting into a physical altercation is just as petty as what they allegedly did to each other to make it get to that point.

I too like Mayor Bell but know nothing about Lundy. But how can we be so negatively judgemental about politicians being physical when we just a month or so ago had a BT poster who is a college professor brag that he knocked a guy out (breaking his jaw) because the guy made a remark he didn't like about his girl friend of the time.

I presume we will soon find out just exactly what was said or done to precipitate this altercation. Perhaps we will then "find for the defendant" then as well.

And we wonder why the other 60+ municipalites don't care to support Birmingham.

You don't think the status of the mayor and city council that were big players in the return of UAB Football and its funding is Blazer related?

A simple request to the mods probably would suffice.

Let them make the call.

A substantial number of voters in those suburban communities left B'ham for various reasons (not all were "white flight") and they probably harbor varied degrees of negative feelings about the central city. So far, it has not been the nature of Alabamians to nurture its largest city. As we are seeing with schools, first they moved out of the city and its system, and now they are separating their local schools from the Jeffco system as well.
