Yahoo's take on Coaching Winners and Losers
Has us in the to be determined category.
Memphis. Mike Norvell is, at the moment, the youngest head coach in FBS at age 34. He’s an offense guy, having coordinated some up-tempo, explosive attacks at Arizona State under Todd Graham. But he wasn’t the widely perceived first choice – that was Odom, who had served as defensive coordinator at Memphis under Fuente. This can be a good job, if the fickle fan base stays involved and enough of the deep local talent stays home.

Memphis has never had a fanbase. JF won without a fanbase. If MN can keep winning then the fans will stay tuned in. It will be interesting to see if he can run a program.

We actually have a group of hard core fans (around 15k?) who patiently suffered though listless and catastrophic seasons. My hat is off to them.

I think his talking about the other 40,000 who come when the Tigers play a P5 school.

Memphis has a fair weather fan base. But everybody in Memphis cares about Memphis football, even if they aren't actually Memphis fans. It's really the same as the basketball team. It's just people have low expectations and our longest sustained level of success have been three season hiccups. If we went to ten straight bowl games, we'd have a solid 35,000-40,000 at every game... At least.

I dont think we are any more or less fickle than other fan bases in our situation. When a team wins, the people come. When they lose, they dont. Now if a team is winning and the people still dont show up, I would be more concerned.

Yup. Some of our fans do not seem to understand this is how it works at pretty much every school in the country. Win and fans show up in droves, lose consistently and most stop showing up... There are some schools that are consistent winners that would struggle getting 50,000 - 60,000 at one game, let alone two in a season.

RE: Yahoo's take on Coaching Winners and Losers
Our fan base is a lot better than many teams we compare ourselves to. Outside of the top schools, most teams have difficulty getting fans to their games on a consistent basis. The casual fan will not come out when the team is losing, the conditions are less than ideal, or the game isn't considered "big". We don't have the fan bases of Alabama, Texas, or even someone like Tennessee. But, our schedules, stadiums, historical success, and financial support are not the same, either. If we continue winning, our fan base will continue to grow. Having a schedule that included Oklahoma, Texas, TCU, and Baylor would help attendance numbers immensely.

This...I ran into alot of people I know at games this year that are big fans of other schools. If you win casual fans will show up.

Given our long history of losing and poor conference affiliations, we have the BEST fan base in all of college football. We still haven't even been able to win our mediocre conference outright, and were't even very close this season. This place will explode like our buddies up in Louisville did when we actually win something big.

Hense, "fickle."
If Memphis goes 5-7 next year, the avg attendance will be in the high 20's.

Not having Ole Miss on the schedule will hurt next year. But, I think the coach will generate a lot of new excitement around the team.
You're right, though. If we struggle, attendance at our games could look similar to the SMU game this year.

Or, you know, they could go 3-9 like they did in 2013 (without a winning season at that point since 2007) and average 32K.
Whatever fits.
