If Cincinnati and Houston are poached by the Big 12...
should the 8 biggest G5 names form a football-only conference, and then go into different conferences for basketball. For instance, here would be my eight:
BYU---->already in WCC
Boise State----->move to WCC
Navy----->already in Patriot League
Army----->already in Patriot League
Air Force----->move to WCC or MVC
UConn----->move back to Big East
Memphis----->move to Big East
Temple----->move back to A-10

With this plan, each team would play 7 conference games, allowing them to play 5 challenging OOC games to boost the resume.

Air Force tried to get into the MVC and were told no damn way now or ever. The WCC is a conference of private religious schools, which AFA is definitely not.

Cincy or Houston? That conference might be lacking some of the major g5 football powers

...then they will look like this:

because it doesn't look like the Big XII wants to expand.

The service academies don't fit neatly into any other categories, they're not similar to "public" universities, even though in a technical sense one could argue that they are. Army was the only non-Catholic member of the MAAC from 1981 to 1990. After that, they joined The Patriot League, where they and Navy are the only non-private members.

AAC + Rice, Army, Air Force, Marines, wait-they aren't Division I. UMass maybe.
AAC West-Air Force, Army, Navy, Tulsa, SMU, Rice, Tulane

Football only conferences are not allowed by NCAA.

Nope. AAC would just invite someone from Sun Belt, C-USA, or MAC and keep going.

Except the AAC is not in a position to draft Army, and Army won't volunteer to join.

Big 12 might not have any choice but to expand though. They were hurt this year by not having a CCG. Again. And the other conferences aren't going to give them a get out of jail free card either.

They would join this. By getting all 3 in the same division, it leaves Army with 6 games for flexible scheduling. Typically a conference meant 8 conference games + Air Force and Navy, so only 2 games flexible. And they have private schools with similarly high standards in their division who they might schedule anyway. Its the best possible conference setup for Army.

I am always amazed by people who throw out huge conferences as the answer. When the problem is trying to find 12 good football programs, the answer isn't add 6-8 OK ones. Pick the 2 best you can find. Don't dilute it any more than you have to.

Four games. 12 games minus 8 in conference (six in division, two cross division) equals four games for flexible scheduling.

It may be the best possible conference set-up for Army bar an eight team conference including Air Force but not Navy, but "the best possible conference setup for Army" is still not automatically better than their status quo, and taking Army/Navy in conference remains a net negative for Army.

Could invite The Citadel, they are D1.
