If you've looked into it then you should know the reason why UNC doesn't have Engineering.

i don't care what their reason for not having it is.

most large flagship unis offer engineering. not offering engineering is like not offering chemistry or biology, in my view.

In 1931 the Univeristy of NC, North Carolina A&M, and Woman's College of NC were merged due to the great Depression in order to make certain they were saved from the ravages of the Depression.

As a consequence of the merger, NC State and UNC-Ch were split into two sides of a coin - NC State would have all the Engineering, Ag, Textiles, and similar programs. UNC would have all liberal arts, and professional schools. UNC's engineering program at that time was closed.

The system now has 16 schools, but NC State, nor UNC can add or cancel a program without approval by the System. Their boards of trustees don't hold the real power, that power is held by the system on Board of Governors.

The net result of this partition is the migration of UNC to a more female oriented school as Ag, Engineering, Textiles, Forestry, etc., etc., are male dominated fields.

Perhaps the question could be turned around.

Where is Clemson's medical school, pharmacy school, dental school, etc., etc.? VT was in the same boat for decades until the tenure of Stegal and the partnership with Carillion and the political power and pressure that VT amassed. From the early 80's until the early 00's.

Clemson is a fine university. You have kept it small, and therefore have been able to keep it more exclusive and the changes in the economy you majors are more desirable and like the other STEM intensive cow colleges, your majors now appeal to women, and you are not instantly associated with farming and building roads.

Don't get caught up in the myth of the single flagship - that's an antiquated notion, especially in States where schools have had their offerings regulated or in States with multiple systems like Texas.

I don't associate professional schools like med, pharmacy with basic things that a 4 year school should offer for undergraduates. Those are professional schools and reality is SC medical and pharmacy and law schools are full of CLemson graduates. There is no reason to have another medical school and pharmacy school for SC residents given MUSC also offer medical graduate programs. A medical school out in a rural area like CLemson makes no sense anyway.

All I know is there aren't many public universities the size of UNC that don't offer engineering. UGA used to be one but now it does. Oregon is the only other that I know of.

don't understand your fondness for 'cow college' and STEM. CLemson is a comprehensive university, you can major in a variety of things including the liberal arts and business. The agricultural programs actually have a hard time getting people to enroll.
You also have to understand the the structure of higher education in NC. Legally the University of North Carolina includes all 16 campuses. With UNCC,WCU,ASU,ECU,A&T along with.NCSU all offer engineering programs within the system. UNC is largely a liberal arts school at the undergrad level

He said the Triangle-area is a post-graduate "landing" spot, a place where one land a nice job and settles down.

Reading comprehension isn't a requirement to get a UNC diploma thrown in your car window. 03-wink

Technically, every place is a destination if you start from somewhere else.05-stirthepot

Besides, I asked Pack not either one of you.

Destinations - the beach, the mountains, the all nude strip club, Bourbon Street, NYC, Pike Place, the Louvre, Paris, Pisa, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Toronto, Montreal, etc., etc. These are destinations.

Raleigh, Charlottesville, Austin Texas, Roanoke, Vermont, Long Island, - these are places to live.

Hell holes - Columbia SC, NJ - about a mile inland off the Hudson to the NJ Turnpike, parts of Philly, parts of Florida, Atlantic City, Detroit, Gary, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Cairo, Naples, Paris' suburbs, most of Mississippi, Alabama south of Hoover, etc., etc., these are hell holes that you visit out of curiosity but do not want to return or stay.

Of course I have my own personal biases, but a Bass Pro Shop is not a destination for me, nor is the Mall of America, I'd rather go to Minot or Fargo - both places that you have to make a conscious decision to go and I have and they are closer to hell holes than places to live.

The RTP is boring for an adult. It's great for kids.

Unless you live in a hell hole, or in the rural boonies, Raleigh/Chapel Hill/Durham - it's nothing great. It's nice, but nothing special, nothing that is not duplicated in many other nice places.

If you have seen the movie Pleasantville, you get the concept.

I don't hate Raleigh. I used to live and work there, grew up near there and be default the same for Chapel Hill and Durham as they have grown to be essentially neighborhoods of each other.

Interesting that UNC people say NC State is the engineering schoool. What about UNC-Charlotte? Seems like a UNC person would say UNC-Charlotte is our engineering school, rather than point to their rival NC STate. lol

i understand UNC is basically just a liberal arts college, that is why I pick on it.

State was established to be NC's land grant ag based school. It is basically the UNC system's technology flagship campus while Charlotte benefits from having Duke Energy & other engineering companies located in the area.
