List of schools that have dropped out of Division I
Help me create a list. What are the schools that have left Division I since the turn of the century? I've got two so far:
Birmingham Southern
Centenary
Note that UAB doesn't count, as all they did was drop football but are still Division I.

New Orleans was going to but I don't think they ever completed the process.
Winston-Salem State was in the D-1 transition for three years before going back to D-2. They played a full MEAC schedule.

Back then, the Mid-American was primarily (if not entirely) what we would think of today as a Division II conference. Until 1973, NCAA members were either major college (Division I) or small college (Division II). It's possible Miami was already considered major college because, if memory serves, they were ranked in the AP poll as early as the 1950s. On the other hand, Bowling Green won the mythical small college national title in 1959 and Ohio won it in 1960. I know Bowling Green didn't move up to major college until sometime in the 1960s.

There are a ton of schools that have dropped out from way back then, I mean relatively recently, plus Butler is obviously still D-I.

The MAC was a minor conference, but some of its teams competed at the highest level. Cincinnati was a charter member of the MAC in 1947 and played in bowl games following the 1946 and 1950 seasons.
Cincinnati's schedule in 1946:
Indiana
Kentucky
Marshall
Dayton
Ohio
Michigan State
Tulsa
Xavier
Western Reserve (which had been a big-time program in the 20s and boasts an 11-10 all-time record against Ohio State)
Miami (OH)
Virginia Tech (bowl game)
We had similar schedules the whole time we were in the MAC (1947-1952). I don't think anyone would call this a D-2 schedule.

Some schools dropped D-1 football. Hofstra and Northeastern come to mind. But they kept the rest of their sports in D-1.

Houston Baptist dropped out in the 90s or 00s, but recently came back.

Pacific's still D-1, they just don't sponsor football anymore.

Utica College played Division I basketball for a few years during the 1980s. They are Division III now.

Seattle University moved from D-I to NAIA in 1980. They moved from NAIA to D-III in 1997, then D-II, and transitioned back into D-I a few years ago.

University of Chicago. Member of the Big 10 from 1896 to 1939.
Dropped football in 1939 and then started it back up as a Div III in 1973.

Denver dropped to DII in the 60s and returned in the 90s.
Tampa dropped out of DI and is now DII.
Birmingham Southern dropped out of DI.
Grinnell College of Iowa used to be in the MVC, as did Washington (Mo) and Washburn.
Abilene Christian was formerly DI and just returned a few years ago.
Hardin Simmons had some bowl appearance as DI. They tried DI again in the 90s but dropped down again.
W Texas A&M was DI too, now DII.
US International was an independent DI out of San Diego. Dropped out and has since been renamed.
The Univarsity of the South was a member of the SEC and now DIII.

Check out the histories on wikipedia. The Transamerica and Big South both had several casualties in the 90s.
Armstrong Atlantic St was formerly in the Big South, now DII.

And they still have more notable basketball history than 90% of all current programs. Amazing.
