Why College Sports Are Most Popular
A bit outdated, but still basically true. Notice the importance of pride and tradition. http://www.imgcollege.com/why-college

I think it is because athletes actually have something to play for with regards to turning pro so they don't act like the entitled during college. Way more fun to watch than any pro sports.

Just wish they'd stop with the rah-rah crap when it is more corrupt than pro ball. Everyone in the NFL has the same amount of money to spend, no schedules are padded and EVERYONE is eligible for the playoffs ...

Oh, and the players pay taxes on the money they're paid.

The problem is in all of the major sports college basketball is the only one more popular than it's pro counterpart. Yet for some reason they keep trying to change college basketball to be more like pro basketball.

That's not true anymore.
There are many recent articles about it; here's one : http://www.therichest.com/sports/ranking.../?view=all

Well of course it's a huge money maker, you aren't having to pay your employees, it's the perfect setup to make a fortune

Being a player on a college team is totally voluntary. Although they may not make large salaries, the benefits they receive do have substantial value. Even the players who are not good enough to make the pros are, in many cases, helped in getting jobs after graduation.

Not sure about that. College FB has a huge following and is probably more popular in states without pro teams. This is certainly true in Alabama. Even in Tennessee (where I grew up), I would say that the combined FB fan base for UT, Vandy, and Memphis is quite a bit larger than that of the Titans.

The only thing wrong with college basketball is the players come in with a lack of fundamentals. It starts at the Jr high level. Players don't even have proper shooting form or how to play defense with their feet. Those are things that used to be taught in jr high.

It is because many people attended the schools...spending several years on the campus.

In many other areas of the country, college sports are a distant afterthought, and they live, passionately, for the NFL.

Whatever you like, embrace it.

RE: Why College Sports Are Most Popular
I used to be in the "college is way better than pro" crowd, but the realities of power conferences, politics, and money have really turned me off. The 1 and done rule in basketball and the bowl system / ranking system in football take away any hope most teams have. Someone like Wichita St can build up a program into a contender, and then a team of 1 and done's at UK can knock them out early. A team like Houston can lose one game and have little hope of a top 10 ranking. That same Houston team (or Memphis, or Navy) could have gone undefeated and probably still would not be allowed in the playoff. A team like OU can lose to a bad team like Texas, and they are still in line for a championship.

In pro sports you get to know the players over 5 - 10 years. Even if they're not great, they are YOUR players. Maybe that's how college used to feel before transfers, 1 and done's, and the win now or leave mentality of the fanbase. I don't know.

RE: Why College Sports Are Most Popular
I have lost respect for college athletes (P5 football players, in particular), as they have sat back and allowed coaches to make generational wealth while they leave school with their General Studies or Parks & Recreation degrees, if any at all. When college head coaching jobs are essentially parallel moves with professional head coaching jobs, something is wrong.

However, I do not blame the system, I blame the laborers. No one has more leverage than college football players. There is huge money at stake and they are not replaceable. The Missouri players were willing to not play for what may or may not have been legitimate issues, yet they have no problem not demanding to be paid, I say at least $1,000/game. Football players are brave as hell on the field, but when it comes to leveraging their power they are weak as all get out.

Recently saw a map graphic displaying the interest in college football ... I was stunned to see that outside of the southeast (particularly AL), college football is basically an after thought unless there is a school located in that particular town. The same map for the NFL is a juggernaught.
