Greg Schiano to Ohio State as DC
Interesting pickup for the Buckeyes. I know some Rutgers faithful are going to have the vapors over this, but I don't know if it changes the dynamic. Ohio State was likely to get a DC with chops who also knows how to recruit, and I don't see him staying any longer than a year or two.

Greg Schiano to join Ohio State as defensive coordinator.

I posted this on the main board but here we go!

Greg Schiano is an excellent defensive coach. He won't be a co-coordinator; he will run the tOSU defense. He obviously does have recruiting pipelines in New Jersey and Florida. But he does have a rep as NOT being a players coach since his Tampa Bay HC tenure. His pro coaching style was not only noted by the South Florida and NJ media, it made national news. He will make his players better, but this isn't 2001 when he was an unknown assistant. It is a good hire by tOSU, but the recruiting factor may be a tad overrated.

I wouldn't say he isn't a players coach. His kids loved him when he was at Rutgers from what I can tell. The whole incident with LeGrand was handled really well. I think kids saw that and knew that he'd always have their backs. Thats one thing you can't take away from him, he loves his kids who come and play for him.

^ agree. He's just a hardass who has your best interests in mind. If a player can't handle that, then they need to grow up. The Bucs players responded like you'd expect a team of losers to respond, which is have too much pride and cockiness to open their ears up and listen. There's a reason why they were terrible, and a reason why Tom Coughlin, Bill Walsh, Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick all were so successful in their careers despite being hardasses. Not saying Schiano would have won there or even ever become a great NFL coach, but their player makeup was the biggest issue of all.

RE: Greg Schiano to Ohio State as DC
My first reaction was great hire; can't believe we got someone who was looking for a head coaching position at a decent number of schools. My 2nd reaction is a bit more mixed. Getting these guys the 2nd time around doesn't work as often as it feels like it would. Probably a good hire still.

My third reaction is I can't believe how far Luke Fickell has fallen down this list. Most Buckeye fans who don't follow the coaching staff super close (including me) have been thinking of him as the lead defensive coordinator (or the only one) these past two years. Now it seems the co-defensive coordinator label is just a label. That means he went from 1-year head coach, to defensive coordinator, to co-defensive coordinator where he isn't the main one.

Schiano goes from the NFL to a college program that is as close to a professional team as you can get in terms of resources and talent.

Big 10 is going to really be fun going forward between Iowa, NU, Nebraska, Wisky, OSU, MSU, Michigan and PSU. Lots of heavy weights and some programs punching above their weight class (NU, Iowa)

Co Defensive Coordinator who likely gets paid more $ than all but a handful of G5 Head Coaches. Pretty sweet deal. I'd imagine his salary has to be pushing $500K if not over that

Shiano recruited and developed some outstanding kids that were 2 and 3 star ratings.

He is a defensive guy all the way and will make OSU become an even better defensive team. As for recruiting, OSU is in the top 15 every year under Meyer, so it's not a big issue if he hurts or helps.
