RE: UTEP and Rice flirting with Mountain West
Oh great. Here we go. Let the pimping begin.

With basketball crapping the bed, there is less and less incentive for UTEP to want to stay.

I hope the league's leadership is smart enough to stay at 12 if they do leave at some point. At this point let the TV money be whatever the TV money is going to be. We can make more revenue if we do well in football and correct this basketball quagmire.

Mountain West Meetings: Expanison is a topic
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...-expansion

Strange that it is even a topic at the meetings. Wonder is something behind the scenes that we don't know about. CUSA TV contract? MW TV contract?

Interesting the Wichita State inquired about membership 2 years ago. Perhaps, indicating why looking at restarting football came up at WSU.

I don't see any expansion in the immediate future, but to have as a topic when the past 2 years wasn't part of it does make for interesting discussion.

RE: UTEP and Rice flirting with Mountain West
I think UTEP goes, just because of their location.

Rice, if they go, would be CUSA's UTEP, but I highly doubt they would like that.

UTEP I understand. Rice is so far out of their blueprint, I don't get it.

Maybe one or more Mountain West teams are being considered by the Big 12, and the conference wants to be ready.

Good move for all parties. UTEP and Rice would be in a conference they want. CUSA splits the pie 12 ways instead of 14. There would be no reason to backfill CUSA at that point.

I doubt any MW school is being looked at by the Big 12. However, the one scenario that may and I say "may" pop up is the AAC losing 2 and inviting Army which then would really tempt Air Force to join as a football only.

Yeah, let's split the peanuts into even smaller shares...

The MWC needs contraction not expansion.

But why would Rice want the MWC, unless as mentioned earlier, the TV contract is going to be so onerous that anything else would be better? I thought they'd hold out for the AAC, or the Big 12 in a dream scenario.

Better football and basketball payout. Likely a better TV deal too. Also, the academic profile is a bit closer for Rice.

Staying at 12 would likely put MT in the west. Ugh.

RE: UTEP and Rice flirting with Mountain West
While the travel for us (Rice) would be theoretically worse, many MWC schools are near airports with easy access from Houston (Vegas, San Diego, Albuquerque, San Jose, Colorado Springs, El Paso assuming they go as well, even Boise).

Remember that both Rice/UTEP have a history with many of these schools (albeit mixed).
