Directions - Who's better?
Who has the better sense of direction, men or women?

Sure, we guys have poked fun at the ladies regarding their sense of direction, or rather their utter LACK of a sense of direction.

Heck, when given a 50/50 choice, somehow my wife ALWAYS picks the wrong direction.

But in reality, are we justified in our jabs?

Apparently, yeah.

Sorry ladies! Men really DO have a better sense of direction: Males use a different part of their brain to navigate - and giving testosterone to women boosts their ability

I shared this with my wife in an effort to console her.

Oh, and with my superior sense of direction I was able to find my way to the dog house with no problem whatsoever.

RE: Directions - Who's better?
I am pretty good at directions, but my wife is freakishly, instinctively tuned in to where she is at all times. Maybe having a Master's in Geography helps.

Years ago we were in DC and riding the Metro to and from our destinations. I was in pretty good shape knowing where we needed to go next but we had to go down another level and then I was lost, not knowing which line to take. She proclaimed we were going East and it was in that direction (pointing three levels underground). I have never doubted her since, unless she has had two glasses of wine.

RE: Directions - Who's better?
I'm not sure if the guys I know have a bad sense of direction or are just too stubborn to ask for directions until they are utterly lost. I can distinctly remember two occasions where it was obvious we were going the wrong way, and the man kept driving despite all indications we were going east when we should have been going west. He actually drove 50 MILES the wrong way. Maybe it's that guys are too proud to admit they are wrong.

Now, I am directionally challenged in the way that I get turned around very easily. If I turn down an unfamiliar street to a house, I usually have a hard time remembering which way to turn to get home, if I don't make a good mental note. I think it's genetic because a few years ago my aunt admits she is the same way.

I think it's based in evolution. Men had to be hunter-gatherers and venture far from home without getting lost. They had to be single-minded and focused on one thing when pursuing an animal. Women stayed in a home area and had to be good at juggling lots of children; therefore, women can multi-task more than men.

I would be at work and get a call from my wife. She was driving and would ask me which way to go. Keep in mind she's doing 35-40 mph or 65 is she was on the interstate.

I'd have to ask her a series of questins:
1. where are you
2. which direction are you going
3. what do you see on your right (since she didn't know which direction she was going)
4. where are you going

By the time I figured out how to get where she needed to go and tell her to take a left on _____ or take the __________ exit, she would say (frustrated and a bit ticked off), "It's too late. I passed it."

Then I'd have to explain to her to turn around, yada yada yada.

Then I got this incredible idea: I'll get her a GPS (before smart phone gps was prevalent)

I bought her a Tom Tom. I was pretty pleased with myself. No more urgent, last second calls on how to get somewhere.

Shortly thereafter I was at work and got a call...

"How do I program this thing?"

If it ain't one thing, it's another. 03-wink
