Sounds like Fran is coming back. Also sounds like your AD doesn't realize that with FBS competition, you get bigger donors and a better buy in by the fans--but that comes with greater expectations. He isn't playing FCS anymore. You can't keep a coach for 20 years because nobody really notices the lean times. In FBS, they notice.

I feel for you guys. Texas State should not be where it is. You have far too many students, far too nice of facilities, far too much support to be where you are today. I don't know if it is your football coach or your AD, or both.

Reading between the lines, it looks like the administration is telling the AD, "If you want to fire the coach, then the boosters have to pay for it," and the boosters will not commit the money needed to fire Franchione and hire someone new.
The AD is stuck with the unpleasant job of trying to spin those facts to people who want the school or boosters to throw more money around.

RE: Athletic Director Larry Teis
This is just me but I've wanted the guy gone for going on 4 years now. There's a large contingent that wants Fran gone because of the record and the season we just experience. That particular group is students and people that don't have several years of support and donations invested in the program. We have had this guy for 12 years now and have not had a winning season in Basketball and only 4 in Football. 2 of his hires are coaching highschool now, one hs football and the other girls basketball. The 3rd I don't think is even coaching. He repeated dodges interaction with the smaller boosters and doesn't attend very many athletic events at all. There is evidence of several years of this. Now with the latest flare ups being documented people want him gone more than anything. He's running a very piss poor culture in what could be a strong athletic department. There are other ADs that do more with less and we badly need someone like that at the helm.

Last year, Texas State went 7-5. Blame the 6-6 P5 schools and others getting a spot before them in bowl games.

Last years record is not even the topic of this discussion; much bigger picture than that. Who do we blame for giving coaches raises for .0500 and below performances?

Teis' e-mail is a Worst Hits of All Time list chock full of factual inaccuracies, sympathy begging, blaming the fans for all his problems, and at times borders on general incoherence. It's shockingly unprofessional and is not befitting of an FBS athletics director.
After reading through his e-mail to Vozzelli, our management and editors (comprised of mostly impartial writers from Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, UTSA, or have no loyalty in particular) and myself are in agreement that Larry Teis is not fit to lead the Texas State University athletics department.

RE: Athletic Director Larry Teis
the reality is Texas State fans are not very accepting of reality
I can see why some might be looking to get rid of Fran, but again the REALITY is that Texas State only just moved up to D1-A a few years ago and Texas State was NEVER a highly successful program in D1-AA so it is not like they went from dominating D1-AA to suddenly under performing in D1-A and in fact they probably well under performed in D1-AA
Fran got to 7 wins last year which is not great, but it is not terrible for a team that was just moving up to D1-A and that has a TON of competition for recruits and no real history of on the field success to work with at ANY level for recruiting
while it is nice to blame the AD for not going to a bowl game that is really not in his control and if Texas state had gone to one I think people might feel a bit different
"The Drive" was carried out very successfully and while much of that had support well above the AD level it was still the AD that made the day to day "drive" happen and the facilities were built very quickly, they turned out very nicely and they are within budget
the student fee was passed (with the help of the higher administration for sure) and it has been maxed out
Texas State has a nice athletics budget to work with for a program in their position, but they absolutely do not have money to just be firing coaches left and right because of a down season especially if major donors are not willing to step up
Texas State has done well in baseball recently and they had a very nice hire in mens basketball
the arena is finally going to be renovated and that horrid wall removed and again there is help and support on that from the higher administration, but the AD is the one that will get it done
Texas State has had a nice schedule of teams come through since moving up to D1-A and they have some nice games in the future...Tech in the past and Houston, Tulsa, Baylor and SMU in the future what else to you expect along with getting UTSA in a long series
yes UTSA has done extraordinarily well with their schedule, but Texas State is not the only public school in a major metro area for major programs to want to come recruit in and the closest major metro area to Texas state has one of the most recognized programs in the country dominating it and the next closest well they have a team there that can be schedule to go recruit there
Texas State is not in the position that Houston is in they have not been a VERY LARGE university for a long time they were a medium sized school for a long time with a lot of alumni and students that wore orange or some other color around campus and they are not the only major public university in a major metro area and they do not have SWC history on their side they have a not that great D1-AA history on their side
so while it is nice to have "goals" one needs to be realistic in those goals and they need to be realistic about the starting point towards those goals and they need to be realistic about the time frame to meet them and the amount of resources available to meet them
it is a simple FACT that if Texas State wants to become a program where a coach gets 3-4 years of a 5 year contract to either win more games every year or get fired someone besides the university is going to have to step up and foot the bill for that and only a buffoon would find it insulting to be told that
it is also a simple fact that Texas State has an outstanding academic administration in place that has done amazing work over the last decade to elevate Texas State and they have Texas State in a position to jump even higher even faster at this point and along with that private dollars are probably at an all time high and while the endowment is not as large as it probably should be for a school the size of Texas State it too is moving in a better direction under the current administration
and as of now that current academic administration has entrusted the AD to conduct "the drive" get the facilities in place, hire the coaches and to make more improvements and that alone tells me that the AD is probably doing a better than average job
again if Fran does not deliver a bowl game next year I can see cutting him loose, but I would hardly send the AD packing with him at that point because again I see nothing that the AD has done other than not kiss the butts of NOW NOW NOW screamers with NO MONEY TO GET IT DONE NOW and those are the types that should be ignored and told to sit down or cut a check
it is fun to look at "program X" and talk about all their negatives without looking at any of their positives or without looking at how long or how much they have put into where they are today and think "that should be us too" and all the more so when you totally look past many other similar programs with as many or more positives that have been working at it a lot longer and ignore that they have tried the "fire him" and "fire him too" and "spend more" approach only to end up firing him and firing him too and getting in a position where they have no more to spend
I think it is a bit premature to pull the plug on Fran and I think it is even more premature to pull he plug on the AD even if he does not tell you the things you want to hear or fire someone every time you demand it because the simple reality is he is right at this point and time

Where I think TSU-SM's vocal detractors are enabled is that they reside in a desired state, and could/would benefit from it if there was G5 movement above them. Kind of like the F*Us...are they worthy of moving higher, or do you need to be embedded in a certain area?
Texas State has a higher ceiling than others around them in the conference. They can overreach, but can certainly grow.
