"You realize we're the laughing stock of college football, right?" McNeill asked Thursday. "I went to the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame with Donnie. ... From Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), Dabo Swinney (Clemson) – all of 'em, all of 'em were like 'What the ... ?' ... Gene Chizik and all them. And Compher was not at that deal. He was not there. ...

"We're the laughing stock," McNeill said again. "We're the laughing stock of college football. East Carolina is. The laughing stock."

Pretty repetitive, self serving, and bitter regardless of the veracity of that assertion. I respect the heck out of coach Ruff and understand his pride is hurt but I was shocked to see those quotes.

I'm surprised that McNeill would comment about it but nothing he said wasn't true. Everyone who's commented on it - from the twitterspehere to the talk shows - has echoed what he said. In coaching circles, what ECU did with Ruff is the most recent justification for why coaches job hop. There is no perceived job security.

Compounding that is the list of candidates who ECU has interviewed. The writer even drew legit comparisons between the season Withers just had to ECU's recent season under Ruff. So, who can blame the frustration of that contradiction from boiling to the surface in Ruffs quote. Even though the bottom fell out this season with the QB injuries, he was positioning the team for a strong bounceback year. Many observers see what he did to Va Tech (and almost Florida) with a 3rd string QB and can't wrap their mind around what more he could have done.

It looks bad. "Laughingstock" is probably on the money. Blunt and (to some) perhaps hurtful... but empathy seems to be in short supply across the board. With how Compher informed Ruffs kids via text, it's not surprising that he drew that reaction.

From a Tulane fan:

Fire your AD now. Don't wait 6-8 more years. He's sounds like a variant of Rick Dickson in terms of personnel decisions. I've seen where this goes, and I don't wish that on any ECU fan. Dickson did the EXACT same thing in terms of alienating potential coaches.

It doesn't take long for an idiot AD to get exposed - especially in this conference (which is competitive if nothing else).

But we're not. This is actually not a big deal. We are firing a coach after a losing season. There's been maybe a few tweets from national pundits saying what are they doing, the average fan doesn't see that. The only thing making this more than it is are Ruff's comments and his agent going on a message board spouting off stuff. If anything I have lost a tremendous amount of respect for Ruff. I understand if he's angry or upset but you know what I'm sure Mark Richt is too. He has a much more legitimate case but you didn't hear a peep out of him, he was a professional.

I will admit myself that the coach finding process up to this point hasn't sounded very encouraging on Compher's end as well. We will see what happens but people are making this out as something bigger than it is. Listening to some people you would think Ruff is Vince Lombardi. Again I have no problem with Compher firing a guy that in 6 years hasn't won a Conference title, especially given the fact that for 5 of those years he had a Broyles award winner as his OC. I will have a problem though if Compher hires a coach that is not better than Ruff. We have to wait and see who he gets and how they do.

A laughing stock Ruff? More or less of one than we were for going into victory formation and losing the damn game. How about calling pointless time outs at the end of the Cincy game so that they gain an extra 6 yards and shorten the field goal? How about the 100 yards in penalties a game? Or the shining success of our special teams? Secondary play. Geting skulled crushed by Navy over, and over, and over. The bowl record, the division titles, the conference championships....

His comments really made me mad too. If it wasn't for us he would have been a career assistant. Nobody was considering him for a head coaching job. I understand he's upset, anyone would be. My father got laid off after 28 years with the same company by some tool bag that basically told him he was too old to keep, he never raised his voice or complained. He handled it professionally even though the guy that fired him didn't. Ruff always talks about teaching our young players how to be men, then lead by example and be a man. You may feel wronged and cheated, but take the high road and if you get another opportunity make the most of it and learn from your mistakes. That's what a man does.
