Let's pick one date to Rally Fans to Attend EMU Rival Game
I was thinking, that we could pick a rival game and try to help with attendance. I was thinking of the following plan:
1) For those interested, we meet to brainstorm ideas to gain attendance at this one Game. Some examples: a) We ask Heather Lyke for a one Game promotion of buying one ticket and get one free. I would distribute 1000 tickets to a corporation (I pay cost to print tickets).2) We go hand out flyers to the area basketball coaches to bring their teams.3) We also solicit intramural, AAU, and recreation players. For example, I have a group of 50guys I play basketball with so I will bring atleast 30guys and their families.

2) I will set up a meeting with Coach Murphy and Heather Lyke for us to share our brain storm ideas.

3) We select the game....maybe CMU or Toledo or WMU ( it's got to be a Saturday game.

Let me know if you would be willing to meet and brainstorm....

RE: Let's pick one date to Rally Fans to Attend EMU Rival Game
Luckeyone, You took the words right out of my mouth!!! I was just thinking about this.

Let's definitely pick a game, and we do an all out barrage to bring up attendance at least for that day. I also think someone should contact the athletic department to coordinate this with them. I realize you are suggesting a grass roots movement, but it might work better if coordinated.

Some ideas I have:

1) If you buy tickets in bulk (10-99), you can get them cheap for $5 each. I'd be willing to buy 20 tickets. I'll invite my sister's family, a couple of my friends families, and my own family. I'll tell them I've got these tickets up for grabs, come enjoy the game and visit with me simultaneously. $100 is no small change, but not a huge hit either. Not everyone can do this, but if 5 to 20 of us do this that will be an extra 100 to 400 in attendance. (sometimes people won't even take free tickets to emu.

2) Also, if all of us participating can post on facebook something like, "Going to the EMU CMU game this saturday, good basketball team this year, very nice and family friendly arena, they even have a bounce house. adults tickets are cheap and kids get in free this game". We would need to coordinate with athletic department to make sure it is a game that has the bounce house out and kids free. They do this a lot, just never know when.

3) If anyone is a cub scout or girl scout leader, take your den or troop as an outing. Coordinate with the AD to also make this a special deal for scouts. I can notify the local Great Lakes Council to share information with their packs.

4) Have some volunteers drop cheap Xerox fliers mailboxes around ann arbor and ypsilanti. Heck maybe even neighboring towns like Saline and Canton. Similar message as facebook.

5) Up the advertisement to students during that week. When Ben Braun was around, I remember Nchechey Izugwu and Mick Penesi at a stand set up at the student union telling students to come to the games- it is fun.

If we do this in a coordinated fashion, we can get a lot of new people all at once, then they will be more impressed with the ambiance of the crowd and maybe more intrigued to come back without such a campaign. I think it is apparent why coordination with the AD department is critical. Maybe even, Murphy wants to schedule some recruits to attend that game.

I think a realistic goal for this operation should be to get a crowd of about 2500. Which would be double a typical Saturday game.

No plan will work, unfortunately. The Convo is a nice facility...for graduations and concerts. That should be its purpose.

Basketball needs to be on campus. If I was running the athletic department, I would spend a few million dollars and refurbish Bowen and make that the home arena. It is just dumb to have 1,000 people in a 7,500 arena, you will never, ever have a home court advantage. There is just not the demand for that many seats for EMU basketball and there never will be. It is a completely fruitless endeavor. Again, the only hope is to bring basketball back to Bowen. Not rocket science.

Sorry, I did not actually read your message. Got too excited and barfed out a post. I like your ideas! Especially appealing to hoops enthusiasts and to corporation.

Awesome grass roots enthusiasm. I will help promote through Facebook and will also take the "$100 Challenge". Group tix make me think of a few ideas.

Maybe we can even give MLive the address and invite them!

Bob, I loved Bowen. You were right, when it would only have 2 or 3,000 in there it ROCKED. Remember the fans that would bang on the cielling supports. THAT IS INTIMIDATION.

Might be a lost cause though. I agree 2- 3000 in a 8800 seat arena will pale in comparison.

Regardless, Luckeyone has a good idea here. And we need to do something to bank of whatever success Murphy has achieved here.

OK,

1) I would like to propose mtg with Heather Lyke before Coppin St game.

2) I propose we target our attendance campaign for the Feb 20th game against Toledo. MAC POY candidates battle it out Thompson EMU vs Boothe Toledo

What sayeth you?

Saturday Feb. 20 (noon game) vs. Toledo meets your criteria.

I'd call it the "Pepsi Challenge Game" as we'd buy tixs at a discount ala the Pepsi deal for football...

BTW, Tony Orlando would be your marketing contact person at EMU.

I'd be good for a 100 bucks (provided I don't have to give it to Super, one buck at a time each time I say something positive about the team. Lol.).

RE: Let's pick one date to Rally Fans to Attend EMU Rival Game
I'd think a realistic goal would be to raise $1K and EMU sells you say 200 tickets (at a reduced rate), perhaps on the side opposite the benches. (students should fill the south end of the convo; UT fans will fill the two section behind their bench).

I'd suggest coordinating with Eagle Nation. Inform them that you are trying to boost attendance for a rivalry game and see if they can't max out their promotion for this game (among students).

Maybe EMU could come up with a promotion.

The idea should be to have solid representation in all areas of the Convo (e.g., behind both benches, south end, the side opposite the benches and some in the north end of the Convo).

Despite what folks may say, 2 - 3K fans at the Convo is really nice. They'd be in the lower bowl and it would 'feel kind of full'. Convo will never be a 'pit' like Bowen but a few thousand is fine.

RE: Let's pick one date to Rally Fans to Attend EMU Rival Game
I am thinking about the possibility of leading a grass roots campaign to bring back Bowen for basketball...I will talk to some people I know who could advise if that is a viable possibility.

The "Pepsi challenge" idea, while admirable, is not going to get it done. It is a bandage on a gaping wound. What would 2,000 fans for Toledo, half of which would be UT fans anyway, prove?

Like I've said, the Convo is a nice venue for concerts and graduations but it is bad for EMU basketball.

Bob, EMU wanted to play a couple games at Bowen a few years ago but couldn't for a few reasons (I forgot what they are).

and the flooring is gone... according to Super.

12 noon starting times are non starters for me again I'm assuming our AD agreed to these times for ESPN3 but maybe not.

Maybe we should start a special fund to upgrade our home basketball schedule?
