Mayor elect elaborates on Temple
http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/owlsi...plans.html

Today he stated that he would like to talk to Pitt and the Steelers to see how they do things. He thinks that Temple could possibly get the stadium for free.

I don't think that he realizes that we tried that tactic. We already used Pitt and UMass as an example the Eagles could follow. Part of the problem is that the Eagles see the stadium as a bad fit for Temple. They really don't want us there.
But if they are forced to take us, it will be at a nice profit for them.

Even though I am a TU fan, I see the Eagles viewpoint. In a perfect world, Temple would pack the stadium like Penn State does and everybody makes a nice profit. The $2 mil or $3 mil rent would be chump change for a big time program with 70k fans in the stadium.

So it's like we are living in a condo we can't afford. We take our rent money and put it towards purchasing a more modest house.

RE: Mayor elect elaborates on Temple
I think it's generally a bit difficult for some (citizens of the community, or politicians) to understand why we need a 'new' stadium when there is a perfectly good one within a few miles. Or in the case of our NFL schools, a GREAT one... I know this is an argument USF hears whenever an OCS is discussed. I was amazed how easily Houston, much to their credit, got TDECU build, with Reliant very nearby.

I generally agree that while NFL stadiums are pretty awesome, they are a bit oversized for Temple, USF, etc., and we lose the on campus experience that alumni enjoy. But can be viewed as a luxury, not a need. We just need to make the case... and eventually we will get our OCS.

As he should. That's every mayor's job to represent the people of the city.

I can attest that having your OWN stadium that is actually designed for YOUR TEAMS actual needs is paramount to the long term success of any college football program.

I HATE playing in the Q under the boot of the Chargers and can't wait until they pack up the moving vans and head up the road a couple of hours away from San Diego to LA.

It's not rocket science! Hope you can get it done Temple. Good luck!

I will update you guys again after the meeting next week.
I expect the mayor elect to say that Temple should go ahead with the feasibility study to look at issues such as parking, noise and trash. He will also say that they should go ahead and do a preliminary stadium plan and get back to him.

It sucks but we do need his blessing along with that of city council.

The unions, neighbors and others will all get to chime in.

This is how things go around here.

RE: Mayor elect elaborates on Temple
I'm really hating when the anti stadium people are saying that even the students don't want it. Every single fellow student I talk to wants it. The only ones who don't want the stadium (For respecting the community reasons. I'm aware of the legitimate budget related reasons) just don't want it because they hate football. There are about 13,000 students living in the neighborhood west of campus and only 3-5k local residents. Temple isn't a commuter school anymore and I'm tired of hearing that **** from people who haven't been on campus in ten years.

The new line is that building the stadium is equivalent to "genocide".

Maybe the mayor is one of those people that likes to show how important he is.
Stroke him a little. Send cheer leaders to his office. Ask for his opinions.

get it done.

RE: Mayor elect elaborates on Temple
For Penn State and Notre Dame...Temple will foot the bill to rent the Stadium. But those games are not every game.

This idiot mayor keeps citing Pitt as his model...when Pitt doesn't play Notre Dame or Penn State at home, they average about 44K fans...which is 67% of the capacity of its stadium. The University of Pittsburgh now has about 28,000 students, but averages about 44K a game.

Ya know why? Because the stadium isn't on campus. Old Pitt Stadium sat 56,500. Pitt put around 40K in the stands because they were a low performer. Now they are better, play in a better conference and play in a stadium that is 33% empty. The attendance has grown about 10% over a FIFTEEN year period of getting better and playing in a better conference IN A BRAND NEW STADIUM.

Houston built a new on campus stadium and added 20% capacity to it and filled it within 3 years (of getting better, a better conference and a new stadium).

Miami averages 62% capacity in its rented stadium. So the average game has 38% of the seats empty.

This is Temple's call for Temple's football program. It is clear that on campus stadiums fill up more than off campus stadiums on an average basis....like when you have an average team. And Temple gets to keep the revenue generated. Building a brand new on campus stadium works....if you don't think so, ask Baylor.

Yeah the mayor shouldn't be trying to control how it's funded if that's really what he's concerned about. Leave that up to the parties funding it. All he can do is block it based on funding, and even then he would have to go through your City Council, right? This stuff is so frustrating - believe me, Tulane fans know.

The "community" is not the city in whole. The term "Community" is a dog whistle. The mayor is trying to make points with the "community".

If you want to know who the "community" is read the comments in the Philly.com website any time a Temple On campus stadium is mentioned.
