Not a fan of NIU due to the fanbase. They have been pretty successful and still nobody shows up. If we are adding a football team to go over 12 we need someone that will increase the tv deal and the plus is if they can be good. I'd take Army, Air Force, or BYU in a second.
NIU is stuck in a pretty awful catch 22
Our fan base has grown weary of driving 45mins-1hour or taking a 40min train ride from Chicago to watch the Huskies playing some lackluster (in the fan's eyes) MAC teams in November on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Obviously a solution to this would be an upgrade in conference to invigorate the fan base by playing much more exciting, quality opponents. Now here's the rub, the only way to achieve the conference upgrade is to build that fan base before the jump. The fans are staying home and watching on TV (reflected in our fairly good TV ratings) where it is nice and warm and they don't have to worry about that same 45min-1hour drive or 40min train ride at like 10-11pm on a mid weekday game with work the next morning. But if you compare our TV numbers to most in the MAC or even a fair portion of AAC fans, we definitely add to the value by media presence and viewership. I can only imagine those all going up by increasing the quality of opponent and fan support SHOULD follow. It'd be a bit of a gamble but at least you wouldn't have to worry about our football dragging the conference down. Also NIU basketball has been trending upward after having signed a 4*G prospect from in state. Currently sitting at 7-1 with a loss to Mizzou and playing a vulnerable Ohio St next to see if they can actually compete. Currently at 146 RPI right there with Memphis (this is a HUGE boon compared to what they've done lately in basketball) which is not horrible at all at this point in the season.
We have been tracking this on the NIU Board, but I thought I would share since the season is wrapped up.<br />
