The article seems over-the-top to me. Valid criticisms of SBC for not being present. Probably more a scheduling conflict than an intentional snub. The question that never seems to get asked when "firing" talk starts about coaches and administrators is... "Who will we hire as a replacement?" This is especially important for schools like us who know that if we hire a talented coach or administrator he/she will be hired away by a more wealthy school. A conference is run by a few like-minded presidents who have a majority coalition. Commissioners are little more than hired help and press secretaries.

RE: It's time for new leadership in the Sun Belt Conference
At the Sun Belt women's tournament leading into the AState-UALR final, UALR had secured at-large, AState was on the bubble. He said it would be best if UALR won so they could get a better seed. Ok, fine to think it but don't tell us you have a preference on how ANY intra-conference game turns out. We don't pay you to pull for one member over another.

Twice he has suspended AState players based on film sent in by an upcoming opponent when there was no call during the game, and the play was not picked up as an uncalled foul by the supervisor of officials during the post-game review and evaluation.

Then there was 2013 trying to end run around the league football regs to keep AState out of Mobile.

The stated reason for not coming was a family emergency that provided enough time to FedEx the trophy but insufficient time to send another member of the league staff. AState had to track it down because it arrived when our offices were closed and it could not be delivered (at least asked for signed receipt delivery instead of leave it on the doorstep).

Commissioners are the hired help and have little substantive power for the big picture operations that require membership vote, but there is power to enforce the rules, there is also the power to ignore the rules and force the membership to bring up an issue such as UALR dropping below the required minimum number of sports.

The commissioner is really more of a figure head whose goal is to work with the Presidents and Chancellors to assist running the league. They need to be a decent negotiator who can be a very good public representative for our league when dealing with television executives.

There are a lot of people who possess those qualities. It's not like we're hiring a football coach here.

I was amazed and unhappy when the SBC Presidents/Chancellors hired Karl Benson . . I am even more amazed that Karl Benson still has a job with the SBC . . the SBC Presidents/Chancellors allow Benson's inept leadership to continue. Sad, just sad !!

One of these days we'll really get fed up with it and will have had enough.

We can't change things, but we can sure make it embarrassing for everyone concerned.

I'm reminded of the long ago TV interview with now-deceased Cajun Head Basketball Coach Beryl Shipley where he called the Southland Conference a Mickey Mouse League. Don't know what prompted the comment, but I'm sure it was justified.

He was later asked on camera if he'd like to apologize for the insult. He did, issuing an apology to Mickey Mouse.

If he had a legit emergency fine no problem but the fact that moments after Georgia state beat southern his personal Twitter account sent out a congratulatory tweet to Georgia state and ended it with #4bowleligibleteams

Whether he sent out it out or was an intern regardless that just makes it look fishy he really had an emergency/personal issue

At some point, not sure when, it might become necessary for Arkansas State to start taking that "the bylaws are just guidelines" thing seriously too and see how that plays.

I hope the KarlBot2000 is ok, otherwise the SBC will have to shut down operations.
