If they got together with Rice, UTEP, North Texas, and UTSA, they'd form a solid core to a conference.
New Southwest-8 Conference (SW8)
UTSA
UTEP
New Mexico
Colorado State
Air Force
Rice
San Diego State
North Texas
What are the strengths of this conference?
-better media markets
-gateway to Texas recruiting
-bigger slices $$$ from the CFP per team
-strong regionality
What does San Diego State lose? Perhaps a big game with Boise State every year, but you could beef up OOC scheduling with 5 games
Eight teams is too weak of a conference (if one member leaves, the entire conference is scrambling). You also need travel partners for Oly sports. You could still have a good 12 team conference with the following.
South West Conference
-South Division travel partners-
New Mexico/UTEP
UTSA/Texas St
Rice/N Texas
-West Division travel partners-
SDSU/UNLV
USU/BSU
AFA/CSU
that's actually a pretty good conference....the only problem is how does that conference get from where it is now (point A), to where you suggest (point Z)
you'd have to have some MW teams pack up and leave and grab those Texas schools from C-USA....once that conference got going, I could see them easily grabbing Boise State and a few MW stragglers to form that 12 team conference you suggested
Fresno State and San Jose State would be screwed....Hawaii and Wyoming would be on the path Idaho and New Mexico State are now.

If the AAC lost 2 programs but than decided to form a 14 or 16 member league afterwards, Boise State will still not make the cut, Navy's AD will be sure of it.

You've never been to any of those places, have you? There are no dangerous mountain roads involved in the drive from Denver airport to Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, or Laramie.
That sort of makes his point though. What's the difference between SDSU fans not going to LAramie or Ft Collins and SDSU fans not going to Dallas or Philadelphia or Orlando?
Aresco said that if they lose one, they have a replacement on board. SDSU left the Aresco League on good terms. If the Mountain West is going to be a one-bid league, they might as well go to the Big West and dominate.

I hear that the winner of the Vegas 16 becomes the AAC's newest all-sports member.

Santa Barbara and Memphis - two cities that are as culturally similar as they come. Lots in common

That option might not be available much longer. UCSD votes on increasing fees for D1 at the end of May. If the vote passes, they will be in the next day. Going to 12 with UCSD, Grand Canyon and NMSU is doable and would work out better.

Adding 4-6 of the following would be cool: San Diego State, Fresno State, Boise State, Colorado State, Air Force, BYU, and New Mexico. I'd abstain from UNLV until they invest in an on campus stadium and stop hiring high-school coaches.
Colorado State and Air Force would be good picks....
San Diego State is a good pick for the AAC, but they are so far from the core base of the conference
Honestly, I think the American would do best to stay an eastern-based conference
And Texas. And Oklahoma.
Just go ahead and go after San Diego State and UNLV. Make it national...and push the MWC into having to beg Montana or North Dakota State or whoever to join.
