The official statement clarifying the comments. We all already knew this it's just a formality.

Jr is going to speak in convo again on Wed. I imagine he'll explain his words and soften his stance a little.

RE: Idiotic statement by Falwell Jr. dooms Liberty to FCS forever
In my opinion, Jerry Jr. didn't say anything that would/will hurt our chances at 1-A. He didn't say anything that other college presidents and boards didn't already know. They know he and we are a conservative Christian school.

Our timetable for 1-A hasn't been changed by his statement. The biggest factors still within our control are our money, market appeal/fanbase, and our potential. Winning on the field and on the court will only help us.

Politically speaking, I agree with what he said. I also believe the thunderous applause and cheering drowned out his immediate correction/clarification on which muslims he was talking about. I'd rather see him take a stand on issues he and most-to-all of the Liberty community agrees with, then see him cow-tow to the political correctness and hypocrisy shown by the University of Missouri.

Newtimes belief that Jr. threw out all of Liberty's goodwill and accomplishments, that LU supporters have been punked, we're racists hate-mongers, etc. is just plain ridiculous. Also, as a cop with 15 years experience- I've never had a problem with a concealed weapon permit holder no matter their age, sex, or race. So Newtimes, take a breath, untie your panties, and calm down- it'll be alright.

LUO, we disagree on statements that Jr. made having an impact. The debated topics on this board, and in numerous team sites, has predominately been about LU and the how LU is perceived by it's peers. As much as LU fans have beaten the drum on facilities, FOCA, attendance and financial resources, that has not allowed LU to achieve FBS. LU's challenge is to be accepted by a small group of college prez and athletic departments to achieve FBS. There is no mention in what I just said that in any way states LU should compromise it's values.

Even though you and others agree with Jr.'s statements, Sun Belt, Conference USA, and MAC presidents likely don't. They are probably shaking their heads in wonderment at the statements, and Sun Belt prez are likely saying what a wise decision it was not to invite LU. The colossal mistake Jr. made seems to have been an off the cuff comment. While many agree with his political/Muslin/terrorism stance, the statement was a gaff and again set LU back in being accepted by it's peers into the FBS club. Does anyone actually think LU gained anything from this in it's FBS quest? If so, expound the point as I don't see it.

This post is about a gaff that Jr. made that effects LU's desire to go FBS. To bring other factors into the discussion only confuses the topic at hand. Justifications and political correctness clutter the FBS discussion. And thanks for your public service as a law enforcement official. And thanks to my mother-in-law that every year buys me briefs for Christmas, not panties.

Advocating a legal means to carry a firearm on campus isn't going to make other presidents shake their heads. If he said lets all go make a run on the gun stores and go hunt down all Muslims then we would have an issue. The core of his message is please protect yourself and others if it comes down to it minus the fluff. LU and any other Christian University could very well be a target of a group like ISIS. Telling students to protect themselves is never a bad thing. This is more of a anti gun vs pro-gun debate.

You're the one that brought up all the liberal-whining-drivel that matched alot of the nonsense from the SBC Board that "confused the topic at hand." I will accept your back-pedal that it was a gaffe, and that Jr. probably should'nt have made his statement or at least had it prepared so it would be a little harder to misconstrue (as if the media and politicians wouldn't twist it anyway). Again, in my opinion, this doesn't help or hurt our 1-A chances. The SBA, MAC & CUSA know who we are and who Jr. is.

Let me just add, as a Syracuse native and fan. The many stupid, liberal, and political correct positions taken by SU hasn't stopped me from supporting Orangemen Athletics.

In this society of political correctness what he said may offend some, but the truth is many many agree with him and support those comments. There's more to life than FBS aspirations. Taking a stand against the evils of society (Muslim extremists) is worth any backlash the liberal media may throw Jr's way.

The problem is, people are going to take it that he is referring to all Muslims in general.

He can say what he wants, it's a free country, but you're never going to get in an FBS league if Falwell continues to make comments like this. The fact is, 99 percent of the University Presidents in the country, even if they personally agree with Falwell, are not going to say they do because it opens up a can of worms that could hurt the school later on.

Honestly, I have friends who talk like Falwell does, and it scares the crap out of me. I can't promise that they are going to be able to tell the difference between a terrorist, and a muslim simply going about their business in a typical day. Frankly, I think there are many who don't care if they don't recognize the difference.

Has anyone seen his interview on Hanity? It clarifies a little and simply highlights what was said previously.

On another note.... You seriously can't distinguish the difference between a terrorist and someone of The Muslim belief that isn't a terrorist? It i really simple. The terrorist is 1) Violent 2) Terrorizing innocent people 3) usually carrying a weapon (knife, gun, bomb, hammer) and firing it at innocent people.

Now, I know that is simplifying things way too much, and that terrorists in any form most likely blend in to their surroundings, and are indistinguishable until just before or they are in the act if terror. That us one reason to remain vigilant.

RE: Idiotic statement by Falwell Jr. dooms Liberty to FCS forever
I've been waiting to give a response because I wanted to find the right words to use. That is far from a guarantee that I have them now; I am rather poor at translating thoughts and feelings into words.

If Liberty wants to be invited into FBS, they need to participate in the pony show so to speak. That doesn't mean they need to change who they are at the core, but iron out some "wrinkles" and put on the fancy clothes to dress up nice so someone wants them. That means build the facilities to compete at the highest level, hire the best coaches, improve your academic standing, provide more academic offerings (majors, programs, etc.), increase enrollment, etc. That also includes not saying anything that would cause other university presidents to pause if they heard what you said.

Liberty is great that they feel comfortable enough that they can say exactly what they feel. They are not neutered by government money by being a public school. Jerry Falwell, Jr. is not censored by a board of regents that he has to answer to from a conventional sense. Liberty also has the unique opportunity to be influential in the national political scene. As such a conservative pillar in our country, Liberty is expected to act and do things in a certain way.

However, these sorts of things can contradict each other and Liberty needs to make a choice: do the pony show and jump through the hoops to reach FBS and take silent stances on the political topics or keep being a beacon of sorts for conservatives and take the stance of "we are who we are" for FBS and wait for an invite that likely never will come.

So while I may agree with Liberty's message (but not exactly the words) in this instance, time and again it could be proving to be a stumbling block to FBS entry. There has to be a reason why nobody is fighting over us to get us into their conference. The first step to getting yourself out of a hole is to stop digging.

Yes LUO, I am a liberal and progressive and have been a LU fan since the school began. I attended the LU FB games in the 70s at old City Stadium and was born in Lynchburg and worked there many years. I've been a fan a long time and supported the program in many ways, with setbacks and crazy past actions. I support the program financially as a Flames Club member and have done so for many years.

My support of LU shows that those who follow the program are other than graduates, family of students or followers of the church as most are portrayed. I know I am in the minority and that's okay. My participation in the program is to enjoy the athletics the school offers. I didn't go to LU, have never attended TRBC and am a liberal and a progressive.

You've used liberal as a demeaning term in your post. Express your views as you feel needed,, even if that means demeaning progressive and liberal views. GEandMTS has the clearest, concise post so far to explain the situation. Liberal or conservative.
