Miss out again
NIU's top target, Steven Frank, a 2016 3* QB commits to FAU. Rod seems to have a difficult time reeling in top players.

Should we continue to recruit the Tommy Fielder's of the world? That's really working out well...

The only thing about that Frank kid is he was so dang wishy washy... I would bet straight up that he transfers from FAU in 2 years. I actually sense a Georgio Bowers situation where he ends up scrambling sonewhere and never gains traction at one place. With Bowers, I actually think he would have been a top 2 back if he started here from day one. We recruited others and he came to us trying to claw into the top two.

Niu thrives on guys who want to be here from day one04-rock

Exactly. And I love Anthony Thompson anyway. He's your prototypical Huskie QB recruit: no offers, plays in an offense that throws 10 times a game max. And yet he has a strong arm, throws a tight spiral, is accurate, athletic, fast and strong. Basically everything we want in a QB for our system. And he can get a heck of a lot better with more reps and better fundamentals. He's pretty much an arm thrower. Once they teach him how to incorporate his lower half into his throws he can have a cannon. Best of all: he really wants to be here.

Nope. Have you checked the last few classes? Several "top targets" there.

Top target? WT_ are you taking about? You have no idea who are our top targets . We already landed a QB early and for all you know we are looking at JC QB because of Hare's injury.

Late offer doesn't equal top target. Top targets get offers in the summer before their senior year not after.

RE: Miss out again
Apparently somebody needs to do this again...

Finlen
Haldi
Horvath
Harnish
Lynch
Hare
Graham
Fiedler

1...exactly 1...the most number of offers that our starting QB's this century have had. (Left out Nicholsom as I'm thinking he was moderately recruited...can't remember).

Stop the f***ing obsession with the recruiting rankings already...especially at QB, it literally means nothing!

If you want a quantifiable thing to grab on to, then how about Anthony Thompson of Santa also only having 1 offer. More of a statistical correlation that one of them will end up being awesome.

We search, we find, we systemize and we develop...the hard way...and it works.

Looking forward to rooting my butt off for Anthony Thompson down the line.

I think that Santa's early commitment took him off the market. Not sure that is a great example.

Don't forget we have IU transfer Tommy Mister. Although he's listed as a runningback, I suspect he will be given a shot at QB. My guess is Carey will give him plenty of reps in the spring to see what he can do. I personally would like to see him given a shot at QB because we're pretty well loaded at running back for the next few years.

If only we could get a three star QB..... Or better yet a transfer from a school like Alabama! I wish one day we could have the most first team all conference players...

RE: Miss out again
I know everyone on the board doesn't agree with the validity of the rankings. It would be nice, however, to reel in some high rated recruits on an occasional basis. I know we've sustained incredible success with blue-colar, low ranked recruits, but why settle? No one on this board knows what kind of success we could potentially have high rated HS/JUCO recruits. Maybe some don't pan out, but I've seen plenty of high rated recruits pan out (see Alabama, OSU, Iowa, FSU, Clemson). Hell, even in the MAC high rated recruits perform at a high level. Lets look at the MAC 2015 Speciality award winners and their recruiting ranking.

Freshman of the Year: Jamari Bogan (3*), Offers: Georgia Tech, Temple, Toledo
Offense Player of the year: Matt Johnson (3*), Offers: Temple,
Defensive Player of the year: Jatavious Brown (2*), Offers: Georgia State, Marshall
ST player of the Year: Aregeros Turner (3*), Offers: Tennessee, Kentucky, Washington, Illinois, Purdue

A common theme: ALL but one were 3 stars and held multiple offers. In order for NIU to take our program to the next level, it begins with recruiting. We can pound on MAC teams all we want, but until we beat P5 programs regularly (see Boise), we will not garner national recognition. Big games count! FSU, Iowa, Arkansas, Marshall, tOSU, BC, BGSU(!!!!) are games we need to consistently win. I don't understand where the board's complacency comes from, why settle with keeping games close when we have the resources and tradition to go out and recruit STUDS. Yes diamonds in the rough are nice, but highly regarded recruits have the talent to come in right away and play! Turner, Huff, Dj Brown, Mayomi Olootu, Renard Cheren, Albert Smalls, Ruben Dunbar are those players I am talking about.

RE: Miss out again
It's not settling...it's getting the players we want, and that isn't a 1 to 1 match with having a certain # of stars or offers. That simple.

If NIU is going to go to the "next level" as so many want, even demand and predict, you will have to keep getting better players. Plain and simple. It's nice to have kids with a chip but I don't think every kid at NIU got there alone by having the chip. There is talent, enough to go to the MACC for 6 straight years. But eventually it comes to talent and talented kids, believe it or not, also have things to prove and achieve. It isn't just MAC, NIU. The hardest worker isn't always the most successful nor are they always the less talented.

Do you have any fact that any of those players were highly recruited other than Dunbar and Turner? Olootu was a 2 star that was changed to 3 star when he got a late offer from Boise. I believe he had one or two other offers. Cheren had two offers other than NIU, neither program is in NIUs league, also two stars on rivals and was not ranked on ESPN. Smalls, wasn't ranked by ESPN, two stars on rivals, one offer (NIU). Huff was not ranked by ESPN, two stars by rivals. Lots of offers from rivals but only NC State and NIU from ESPN. DJ Brown unranked by ESPN, three stars from rivals, mostly NIU caliber offers. Turner and Dunbar are the only big name recruits.

Please tell us again all the facts you have backing up your argument. No team is 5 deep at QB. See Baylor

Mayomi Olootu (3 Star)

Dj Brown (3 Star)

Albert Smalls (2 Star)

Renard Cheren (2 Star)

All According to 247 sports and Rivals. There are my facts, buddy.
