Expansion related: Herman's Houston Bonus
Herman earns a $5M bonus if Houston is invited to a P5 conference while he's the coach.

Never seen that before in any G5 coach's contract . . .

RE: Expansion related: Herman's Houston Bonus
If Houston gets the call-up, between the new media contract and the added exposure, the $5 million price tag will seem like chump change. Smart clause in the contact - as it rewards Herman and the school if the success is sustained.

If Urban Meyer were to take the Cleveland Browns job, do you suppose they might ask Herman if he's interested in returning to Columbus?

Yes they would and he would be out of town as fast as possible.

Hell, there's about ~35 P5 schools I worry about. Ohio St is one of them.

So far, we've dodged a handful: USC, South Carolina, Georgia, Miami, Missouri, Virginia Tech etc.

If BK leaves for the NFL I think we would look at him also.

Frankly, if we ever lost Herman, I would hope it would be to Ohio St or Notre Dame or Alabama etc.

Having him coach A&M or UT (or even LSU or OU) would suck.

Smart move.

Quote:Herman accepted $2.8 million to allow the $200,000 difference to go into the salary pool for his assistant coaches.

Similar to what Coach Pete did at Boise St. HC salary is sufficient but the assistants getting paid is what helps the program grow and getting quality assistants to stay a while longer.

Calling this news expansion related is kind of a stretch.

Uhhh ... I guess it depends on what the word "related" means.

Lessee ... a coach has a bonus that is contingent upon their school being added to a P5 conference.

"connected"?

Yes. So, yes, conference realignment "related"

I guess you could give a coach a clause in his contract for adding a bonus if he signs a Martian field goal kicker too. I once worked with an endowment drive for a Southern University that had an endowment that funded a scholarship to any applicant who could prove he was the redheaded son of a pig farmer from Pike county. It was the least exercised scholarship at that school.

For this to be realignment related Houston would have to be promoted to the a P5 conference. I don't see FOX or ESPN wanting to fund this. A couple of posters on the internet have laid down some fairly sound business related reasons as to why this would not be profitable. If Texas pushed for such it could lead to more earnest discussions between the networks on how to broker out the Big 12.

Then there is Mendenhall's move to Virginia. To me this move is majorly significant. B.Y.U. hands down was the G5 school with the numbers for inclusion in the P5 in terms of fan base, attendance, and athletic revenue. Mendenhall is almost a favorite son around B.Y.U. He has the second most coaching wins there. Only if he had played for the Cougars could he have been more popular. For him to move, especially to an East Coast school not particularly dedicated to football, means he knew that there would be no further expansion out of the G5 and that his future salary would only be upwardly mobile at a P5 University. So no invite for B.Y.U. to the PAC or Big 12 left him no choice but to make what for his family had to be a really hard decision.

What I think happens is that Oklahoma gets into the CFP, the Big 12 waits out its GOR, and then we will know whether they survive or not. There is no reason for them to expand until they know how much it will cost, and there is no reason for the networks to encourage it until they determine whether the parts of the Big 12 are worth more than their whole, whether a few well placed schools are worth more than the whole, or whether they want to keep the whole.

RE: Expansion related: Herman's Houston Bonus
Although I totally feel Houston should be in a P5 conference, which one could they join? I don't see the Big 12 allowing them to join, because they don't want another big school to compete with recruiting wise in the already over saturated state of Texas....same goes with the SEC. Would the ACC consider Houston? It just feels like that although they certainly deserve to be in a P5, it's hard to see where they would be let in.
