I agree that things are really looking up for us. It looks like the administration is serious about things and willing to spend the cash to take it to another level.

However, Littrell is going to have to perform a miracle and get a transfer QB who can immediately upgrade our QB position for that to happen next season. Seth is very late to the table regarding recruiting and it is probably going to be tough to upgrade our roster much. We are way behind in 2016 recruiting.

I am not even thinking about wins and losses next season. It is going to be about putting a more entertaining product on the field, with a system to build on.

This looks like a good hire, but his success will not hinge on his recruiting abilities as much as it will his strengths in other areas. He will have the same problem that all the non-AAC, G5 programs in Texas have.

Texas is a big state with a ton of quality high school football programs and a fertile high school recruiting scene. However, (1) a significant number of the highest rated recruits are successfully wooed away by football giants such as Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, Ohio State, etc., (2) for the really strong recruits that want to stay home, there are five P5 schools in state competing for them (Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor and TCU), and (3) there are two AAC schools (Houston and SMU, but particularly Houston) that tend to be next in the pecking order for the Texas high schoolers.

This means that Rice, Texas State, UTSA, UTEP and UNT all compete for what is left. Rice has the advantage of offering one of the best regarded educations in the country for those athletes that can qualify, thus setting them off a little bit from the other G5 schools.

You may notice that the remaining G5 schools, UTEP and UNT in particular, are always lagging behind the rest of the conference in getting their recruits committed. I believe that is because the Texas recruits are holding out on making a commitment, hoping for the offer from one of the Texas P5 schools.

The point is, UNT is in a hotbed of high school football, but persuading the strongest 3-star prospects to commit to the Mean Green is, and will remain, problematic. If Littrel can win some recruiting battles, that will be gravy, but recruiting will not be the crux of his program. His success will lie in his leadership and his coaching and training staff. He will recruit good players, but he will be successful by (1) developing his players to their full potential, (2) motivating those players, and (3) putting them in the position to win games with a system that plays to their strengths. If he is not ready to do those things, he will be another “three and gone.”

Couldn't help but laugh at the irony of this one.

It'll be less Fedora and more of Mike Leach's offense.
