If you want to draw parallels to Brownell, we compounded the issue with a bad hire. I'll reserve final judgement until I see who they hire to replace him.

Delusions of grandeur suggest they're going to be disappointed with the pool of candidates that are actually available to them.

Agreed! Many fans initially proclaimed Riley as the next HC, which never made sense. Now, they're saying he won't come because out of respect for Ruffin. Riley will hold out for a job much, much better than ECU.

The other names I've seen all seem to be speculation based on Compher's NIU relationships. If he'd waited a year, perhaps he could've nabbed Dave Doeren.

No coach worth his salt is going to consider that a good situation to be in. Dude went 42-34, 30-18 combined in the C-USA/AAC and 4 bowl appearances, and still got run out of town because he "only" went 8-8 in the AAC. So what's the upside of coaching there? You end up in a sh*thole like Greenville NC, then get handed unrealistic expectations.

No argument from me. You'll get a kick out of this article:

"ECU ought to be able to go, including bowl games, 8-4 or 9-3 more years than not, and occasionally be even better, such as the 11-1 season in 1991 that culminated with a Jeff Blake-led Peach Bowl victory."

What a tool. "Hey guys remember that time 24 years ago when we were good? Why can't we do that again? Go hire a REAL coach who can win 11 games, its so easy!"

RE: ECU fires.....
There is really no reason to think that ECU should go 8-4 on a regular basis, the history there does not support that at all. ECU should be happy anytime they win more than they lose but I realise they are nuts and see it as a real football school for some reason. They have always been the redheaded step child in NC and will continue to fill that role. Greenville is an absolute toilet, the campus looks more like a prison than a university and the fan base and alumni are the dumbest or the dumb. Good luck-they gawna need it!!

This is the reason I do love having Mullet around. He may ruffle our feathers from time to time, but he hates some ezu.

Several names are circulating, including former Auburn coach and current UNC defensive coordinator Gene Chizik, James Madison coach Everett Withers, Virginia Tech associate head coach Shane Beamer, and Western Kentucky coach Jeff Brohm.

Of that list, it would make sense for Everett Withers and perhaps Brady Hoke (no opinion on Brohm, but financially there is incentive).

Chizik should wait for a P5 position somewhere. He can do better than ECU, IMO.

Beamer is interesting. He's been around and coached with some pretty impressive names (e.g. Fulmer, Spurrier and Frank), but I'm not sure what he does exceptionally.

Which one of those guys is an upgrade over Ruffin? I think Chizik and Brohm are, Withers is not, and Beamer is a wildcard. I'd give a lot of credit if they landed Brohm.

Someone on the W&M board said they heard Hoke and Withers were the finalists for the job. Never know these things for sure though, obviously.

Ok, now draw all of the parallels that you wish. Montgomery may be great at ECU. I won't pretend to know a lot about him, but he isn't an obvious upgrade over Ruffin. No one is buying this, "While there was great interest by many during our search, the only offer we extended was based on Scottie's success, vision and desire to be a part of Pirate Nation. That made our decision a clear and resounding one."

It will not make any difference in the long run-they will always be ECU.

Yep, with all the bluster about Ruffin not being good enough and ECU setting their sights higher, it appears they hired another JAG (Just Another Guy). Nothing special or exciting about him from the looks of it. Assistant coach at a basketball school. Cool.

Hahahahaha. Ginormous fail. Thought they were more important than they really are. Ain't no way in hell that was the only offer. If it was... They're crazier than everyone thinks they are.

RE: ECU fires.....
ECU already had their Benny Moss in John Thompson. Maybe they have a Benny Moss 2.0 or maybe they found a diamond in the rough. This new AD of theirs has not been impressive and has forced them to take an unnecessary gamble. We will see next year how it turns out for them. I mean Ruffin had a stacked team coming back, so I would say anything less than 9 or 10 wins would be a disappointment b/c that is what I figure would be expected of Ruffin. They play State next year too, Greenville will turn into a warzone if they lose to State, b/c Ruffin was undefeated against the ACC.

Huge unnecessary gamble they have taken.
