HBCU school cuts all sports including football. Will go from NCAA D2 to NAIA.

I might see Tuskegee stepping up to join the SWAC if more schools in their conference doing this. I think Miles could be the next one to follow Stillman.

This is the 2nd time that Stillman has cut football. I don't really get what their plan is.

Even in the NAIA level you must sponsor 3 men and 3 women's sports. I don't think that they can go to NAIA. Now the USCAA will allow that.

RE: Stillman College Cutting All Sports But Basketball
Seems to me basketball only (men and women) would be a great option for a lot of the really smaller schools

At least as far as seriously competitive sports are concerned. They could have intramurals for the rest and even (gasp) go back playing regional schools and rivals like in the old days.

Stillman was actually D-III for a while, I'm not sure when they moved up to D-II.

So Stillman is not going DI as part of one of DavidSt's strange, but enjoyable hypothetical conferences?

You can't deny now that Stillman is a "basketball school"

They had an all white baseball team. There will be some ripples felt in the area in terms of baseball. But, they've always struggled to put together coin for any of it.

The point was making for the HBCUs was that they can band together to cut the spending down. Stillman in the SWAC could have helped them out. When you see Stillman going down? South Carolina State and others who are struggling could fall as well no matter what level that you are at.

I read Oklahoma City U. cut sports and went from D1 to NAIA, and they are interested in rejoining the D1 ranks and add football.

I think you mean "basketball only school." And Stillman? What is that, a knockoff Spellman? Both are HBCU's. Without doing a Google search, I bet its in or near Atlanta.

It's in Tuscaloosa.

It's where you go if you don't want to have to take math on a computer and deal with...

So was it created in response to UA? Yes I can Google it but it's more fun in dialogue sometimes.

Stillman became a 4-year school in 1951 (with accreditation coming in 1953), and the football team was discontinued in 1950. I would suspect it was part of the transition away from being a junior college.

I don't think so.

It's a private school linked to a church.

RE: Stillman College Cutting All Sports But Basketball
I just reread the NAIA membership requirements. They'll have 4 years to sponsor the necessary 6 sport requirement. So they tear down to have rebuild again? Why not just move to the NAIA and cut the sports to meet the minimum. To me, the NAIA and D2 are basically at the same level but different membership requirements (10 sports for D2, 6 sports for NAIA) and really no difference in scholarship allowances except D2 allows 12 more schollies for football (24 for NAIA*, 36 for D2)

The USCAA organization will allow 1 sport schools for membership. (They may have to move there if they don't plan to add more sports)

*NAIA allows athletes under academic scholarships not to count against the 24 allowance.

Stillman is in the SIAC, which is a HBCU conference, and it didn't help them.
