Acc fb coaches will be as highly thought of as ACC basketball coaches.

RE: ACC coaching thread
Hiring Bronco. Good hire but that's out of left field. I honestly didn't see him as a viable candidate, and I don't remember his name being raised for previous openings.
Here are a few reasons I'm surprised by the hire:
-Born in Utah
-Went to college in Utah
-Mormon individual is the head coach at BYU for 11 years
-24 of his 25 years in coaching have been west of the Rockies (DB Coach at La Tech in 1997)
Congrats to Virginia, but I wonder if this says more about the independent situation at BYU than it does about UVA.

Bronco has been lobbying for BYU to get into a P5 conference for years.

Per #UVA release Bronco Mendenhall was signed to a five-year deal that will pay $3.25 million per year.

It does say that Virginia made a great hire.

Mendenhall, 49, who replaces Mike London, was 99-42 in his 11 seasons as head coach at BYU to rank 12th in total wins among all FBS teams during that time. Mendenhall led the Cougars to two Mountain West championships (2006, '07) and 10 bowl games (6-4). He was the 2006 MWC coach of the year.
“Professionally and personally I seek to embrace the highest standards in college sports, on and off the field, and I love the high standards both academically and athletically at Virginia," Mendenhall said in a statement. "I am excited to not only help provide the continual growth and development of the student athletes academically but also reestablish Virginia as a consistent winner with a fiercely competitive and winning product on the football field.

I agree. I don't mean to disparage UVA, I like the hire. I just don't see Bronco leaving BYU for anywhere unless he had concerns with the situation in Provo.

RE: ACC coaching thread
Did the ACC just go all in on football? We know the ACC is a great if not the best basketball conference but with narduzzi, cpj, richt, cutcliffe, fedora, Fuente , Bronco, fisher, dabo, petrino it seems pretty insane. Has there ever been a conference to dominate basketball and football at the same time for a decent run?

RE: ACC coaching thread
Here's an interesting question:
At a very minimum, there is a number of ACC schools have made an effort to improve their positions, both against other ACC schools and against non-ACC schools. Will that hurt our chances of sending teams to the FF? As it stands right now, the winner of the Clemson vs. FSU game has a reasonably easy walk to an undefeated season and accompanying FF birth. All they have to do is beat their SEC rival, knock off a couple of decent teams, and avoid WTF losses. However, with better in-conference competition, it will be much harder to run the tables. Even if Clemson and FSU are favored in every game, it will be much easier to have an off day and drop a game here and there. Sure their SOS' should improve, but I honestly think that, within reason, W/L > SOS.

All reports seem to say that his concern was that without a P5 conference affiliation they had no way to get to a championship without going undefeated.
The amazing thing is that Virginia had the smarts or gumption to not just look for a head coach out of work or from a lower-tier program or an assistant/coordinator. They did something almost unthinkable and asked themselves if they could find a proven winning coach at a FBS program that might be willing to move to a P5 program that is perceived to be lower in prestige?
It virtually never happens (Richt had just been fired but likely would not have left voluntarily). Yet UVa thought outside the box and that's why it was such a surprise hire.

The UVA-VT games is going to be surprisingly watchable in the near future Seriously though, this hire was a BIG win for UVA.

One thing it does is give the champ some breathing room, a loss wouldn't hurt as bad or knock them out.
