I think we will be cashing those escrow checks from UCF, SMU, Memphis, Houston, East Carolina, Tulsa and Tulane.

If last season was this year, it might have helped with tv negotiations. C-USA is not having a good top to bottom showing in football this year. We have 4 good teams and a lot of mediocrity along with some major disappointments (UTEP for one). Not helping.

I see your point, but really, does it make that much of a difference how good the teams are? What TV execs want are eyeballs. If more people are watching a mediocre CUSA product than a good MAC team or MWC team I think that means more to where our contract will be than wins and losses. Of course, more wins mean more interest, but thats year to year. Each school has a set of loyal fans who will watch and thats what we need to increase in order to see more TV money. It could be spun that if we have good ratings with lousy teams, thats even better, because when we have good years the extra eyes will be even better.

Good bowl viewing won't hurt with this either. We need to have some impact matchups that will keep viewers tuned in.

I agree that digital streaming is the way of the future, but I'm not sure it's time for the conference to go all in on it.

I will say, though, that whatever route we go, online streaming has to be a major part of it. If we go with ASN, then we really need to pressure them to get their streaming back.

There is no excuse for any household in any state within the conference's footprint to not be able to view a televised game. None. This is my sole problem with ASN... it is based on an ownership of stations. I live three hours from ODU and four and a half from both Charlotte and Marshall. The fact that I cannot see any of those three play when they're on ASN is mind-boggling.

When the whole ASN deal started I loved it, because every game was available online. I thought that was the future of sports broadcasting. Then, they did away with it and have become a hindrance to the conference in my view.

If ASN wants to continue to broadcast C-USA games, then they need to commit to either A) ensuring a presence in every market within the conferences footprint or B) getting all games back online.

Before all the doom and gloom, maybe someone should do the math. You've got CFB on Tues., Thurs., Friday and 12 hours on Sat. You've got at least 3 ESPN's, 2 Fox's, a CBSSN and NBCSN not to mention the big 3 of ABC, CBS and NBC putting on a game or two each. On top of that you have the CW's and MyTV's and ASN's looking for live programming.

There simply isn't enough high-quality P5 match-up's to fill all this inventory. There are only one or two monster match-ups per weekend. Then you have to ask yourself, what's really the difference between Vanderbilt or Indiana and Houston or Marshall if there playing similar competition on competing channels. There's really only regional interest for these teams, so one is just as good as another (depending on the season their having). Sure it's all about ratings, but you still have to fill the shelves.

I agree with the digital streaming part. Remember when the MWC started their own network? It was a brilliant idea but it was too soon and isolated all MWC sports to a single network and platform. They weren't covered by anybody else and lost a good bit of money in the process.

RE: Just curious? What is the status of the CUSA tv/cable contract renewal?
ESPN has the best set up for the streaming thing. they put all their cable content online as well as a bunch of extra stuff. if you have a contract with espn you can watch every game on your TV no matter what...what ASN did last year was the next best thing in that if the game wasn't available in your market, it was available online. I'm assuming they just didn't have the resources for that this season, but they screwed us even further because they didn't allow individual schools to stream either (ODU used to stream all of their home games until this year)...I thought ASN was great last year and liked their forward thinking with the live online content, but they really took a couple of steps back this year. no online content; a lot of the games weren't listed (I had to record 9 30-minute shows on one of their channels because they never listed the game on my DVR, but their website said it was on. not sure where the disconnect was though), and a couple of games had some technical difficulties (the WS had the same thing this year so maybe I'm harsh)...

If ASN is a big part of our next TV package I hope they really improve or they end up just being a secondary option. if this season is what we can expect from them I really hope we go in another direction.

I also expected them to improve this year. One thing that has improved is more actual advertising during our games. Last season was almost all public service announcements but this year there have been plenty of paid ads. They are, or were, not sure which, trying to purchase a channel for a permanent location when they distribute to Directv and Dish. Hope that works out.

Their streaming partner was an issue and they've been working on lining a new one up.

Based on their deals with ESPN3 lately, it leads me to believe that they're going to partner with ESPN3 to provide their streaming. They'll get the OTA rights and the revenue from selling ads and syndication rights and ESPN gets all rights and revenue from online revenue.

Even though I hate ESPN, getting a TV deal with Fox and ESPN is by far the best thing that can happen for us. ESPN will likely pick up and produce some CUSA games. Fox Sports has tons of regional television properties as well as FS1 and FS2 to put CUSA games on. ASN fills the gaps.

I don't want anything to do with CBS or NBC. They don't have much in the way of online streaming and their channel options are pretty much just CBS, CBSSN, NBC, or NBCSN.

Compared to:

ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN U, ESPN News, ESPN3 ESPN Gameday, and more
Fox, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2, FSN Channels, Fox Sports Go, and more

Throw in all the Sinclair owned ASN stations, and you have a pretty good distribution network with a deal that includes ESPN, Fox, and ASN.

If ESPN loses the B1G...it could mean good money for CUSA

They need content.

They need content.

ESPN needs no content, they have more content then they know what to do with which is why they sub-license half of it away to CBSSN, Fox, and ASN. Not to mention the bazillion game inventory on ESPN3 they can pull from. Give me a break. LOL. ESPN wants nothing to do with CUSA unless CUSA is willing to give away free content to their ESPN3 website.

And when I say free, I mean not only will ESPN not pay you for the content, they will expect the school, or ASN, to foot the production costs too. I expect CUSA to get paid a nominal fee from ESPN for their Championship game, and then ASN to foot all the costs for production and the games to be syndicated on ESPN3 for free. CUSA's new deal will be whatever Fox is willing to pay with a few pennies chipped in from ASN and ESPN. The AAC teams escrow will fill in the gap. This is why CUSA articles are already downplaying the deal in the media and talking about trying to not make less and signing a short-term deal.

What is the status of new CUSA tv/cable contract?
The present tv/cable contracts expires in early 2016 in a few months. What is the projected dollar amount yearly per team?

We've signed an exclusive $3 per year contract with RT. Games will now only be shown in Siberia.

That's the rumor. Must be true if we both heard it. $3 sounds a bit high however.
