Out of curiosity
Who were the names in the mix when Fuente was hired, and how did that search go down? I've heard from various posts he was the 2nd or 3rd choice. Who was 1 & 2?

Good search firm, a win/win. I think you got the right one in that case. I'm not sure Mac would have done as well as Justin here.

Memphis is going to get a good coach. Remember, when Alabama hired Saban they fired Shula about now and didn't have Saban on board until January.

I think everything Patterson has done at TCU can be done in Memphis. Just my two cents.

RE: Out of curiosity
I found this from an article in last couple hours fwiw

source told the Tribune that Odom felt he was in a good place with both schools after returning to Missouri following negotiations in Memphis on Monday and Tuesday and that the situation should be more clear Wednesday. It was the source’s understanding that Odom had until Thursday to let Memphis know his decision

Difference being, the kind of kids that commit to Alabama will wait on the next coach to be hired. Our recruiting window closes on the 15th. We don't get those kinds of kids.

I don't know abut the actual list the AD used for the hire but here is one version------

Dec 1, 2011 Bleacher Report on Memphis HC search
This is the likely list as reported by Bleacher Report when we hired JF as our second choice. Is there anyone on this list you wished we would have hired or would hire now?

Name -- 2011 -- Now
Sonny Dykes -- La Tech HC -- Univ Cal (13-23)
Mark Hudspeth -- La Lafayette HC -- Still there (31-23) makes $750k
Kippy Brown -- Seahawks WR -- retired after last season
Paul Petrino -- Illinois OC -- to Ark as OC now Idaho HC (6-29) $450k
Jim Levitt -- 49s LB -- Colorado DC $500k
Randy Fichner -- Steelers QB -- Still there
Hugh Freeze -- Ark State HC -- Ole Miss (33-18) $4.5mil
Jeff Monken -- Ga Southern HC -- Army in 2014 (6-17) $1.6 mil
Ralph Friedgen -- Maryland HC -- Rutgers Spec Asst $50,000
Jason Phillips -- Houston OC -- SMU co-OC

But don't we want to get it right more so that get it done? Getting a guy NOW doesn't necessarily secure a better recruiting class. And I'd rather have better teams and recruiting classes down the line. Bigger than next year alone.
