RE: Coach Dickey - New Info
The things you guys are describing is what makes him a good interim coach choice. Let's hold out for a bigger hire that proves our commitment to football.

Dickey would be a GREAT hire here ... he wont be selected because he is not the sexy choice, but he would be awesome .
Think West before the heart attack with better Xs and Os and better player development.

Coach Dickey - New Info

I don't need to be a message board hero. I would never start a thread that I knew wasn't indeed fact. Thanks for the confirmation.
I don't think Dickey will get the gig but we could certainly do worse than someone who loves our brand and wants to be here.

Move by former players to get Dickey to memphis is just like the current players at Mizzou screaming at administration to hire Odom. Neither are going to happen

RE: Coach Dickey - New Info
Guys, I read but almost never post.
I lived in Southlake, TX, about 25 miles from Denton, when Dickey was the coach. North Texas hired our high school's coach, Todd Dodge, to replace Dickey.
NO, NO, NO on Dickey. Nice guy, but left the UNT program in shambles. Yes, some success in the middle years, but only 5 wins about low-level competition the last 2 years. And I think more than 20 games under 500 in total. Dodge only won 6 games in the 4 years he was there. Very much like us with Coach West, only 50 or so players on scholarship when Dickey was fired.
More important to me, the articles in the Star-Telegram and the Morning News after Dickey was fired. There are around 125-150 D1 scholarships ever year in the D/FW metroplex. But the high school coaches were quoted, not anonymously, as saying they had not heard from Dickey and/or his staff in years. That they would call UNT trying to get someone to look at their players, and calls were not returned. Kind of like the East TN coaches when Dooley was fired at UT.
These articles would be easy to find, and the search firm we use is based in Dallas, so hopefully this is taken into consideration.

He would be a good hire and he wouldn't be looking to leave asap.
I could get behind his hiring.
not my first, second or third preference but I agree.
The wife would be thrilled though, she is a big Dickey fan.
Lucky guy.

I'm trying to find a way to say I like this hire without a blatant sexual reference due to coaches name...it's difficult, lol
You like Dickey?!?!
Yeah, I can get behind Dickey...just not the other way around!
Wrong sport.
Pitchers and catchers don't play football.
I think he is saying he would play qb for Dickey but not center.

Comments are interesting, as was Dickey's behavior.

Now, if only Snowtiger would post that she loves her some Dickey, this thread would be complete.

Saluki, thanks and I had forgotten that story. For those who don't want to click the link, Coach Dickey snuck in unapproved jerseys for a game. No names on jerseys, AD was blindsided. Just strange. There was other weird stuff going on, too. Lots of players transferring out.
UNT is a big school, around 35,000 students if I remember correctly. Was approving funds to build a new stadium (which has now been built) at the time, good donor support - so lots of momentum. But the football program was a disaster.

Just to close the loop, "our" school (my daughters went there) was Southlake Carroll. Chase Daniel, Greg McElroy and lots of other future college stars went there. Averaged 14,000 fans per game, about as many as UNT at the time.
Anyway, the main reason Carroll's coach, Todd Dodge, got the UNT job was that UNT's reputation under Dickey with the D/FW high school coaches was so terrible. The thinking was the best way to turn this around was to hire a D/FW high school coach.
I know it sounds like I am trashing the guy - not my intent. But I don't want him as our coach. And all of this info is readily accessible. The UNT play-by-play guy is George Dunham, who does The Ticket morning radio show in the Metroplex. Dunham would be a good guest on local radio. A UNT grad, he liked Dickey personally, but was glad to see him go.

RE: Coach Dickey - New Info
Seeking acceptance and support for the hiring of the football coach from the members of this board is somewhat frightening to me. In an odd sort of way, it reminds me of a line from Groucho Marx, 'I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.'

This could be used to describe our attempts at changing our conference affiliation.

Not sold on Dickey as he had losing record 6 of his 9 years at NTSU. Including one season when he was SunBelt champion. And he is 1-3 in bowl games.
