Why not divisionless? You can still assign ACC CG participants based on pseudo divisions (keep them as they are if you wish, just allow each team to skip two teams per year). Perhaps it's less controversial to call it the "skip some teams" plan?

1) I wouldn't want the ACC to do it unless the SEC, Pac 12, and B1G did it.
2) I like the idea of winning a division championship.
3) Division-less causes the schedule to change too much. I'm just now starting to get use to playing Pitt every year.

RE: Coastal vs Atlantic
9 conference games is a nonstarter for Clemson, FSU, and I would assume GT and Louisville. Having your rival in another conference, in conjunction with needing to maintain 7 home games each year for monetary reasons, means that Clemson will always be against increasing the conference slate.

Also, mandating another conference game removes a potential marquee OOC matchup (In Clemson's case, we have played Auburn 3 times, UGA twice, Texas A & M twice). Before ND joined and the conference ADs rammed in the 9 game schedule, Clemson had to immediately back out of home and home games with OK ST, and Ole Miss. We almost dropped the UGA games as well). ND joining opened up the opportunity to revisit the number of conference games, and it reverted back to 8.

I would rather everything stay the same (even though I agree that the current alignment is not great) than to ever go to 9 games.
As for the 3 permanent rivals for a divisionless format, I would like to see Clemson protect the FSU and GT games. While NC ST is the Textile Bowl, there is not really that much pull in terms of any rivalry any more. Hell, I would gladly take Wake for the 3rd protected rivalry because they, along with Maryland, were the only ones to side with Clemson's 2nd appeal to remove the extra year of probation that the ACC tacked on to us in the 80s. For that, I will always be okay with Wake.

Sure WF and UMD walked out on the vote, but Syracuse, FSU, ND, UL, BC, and Pitt didn't even go to the vote in the first place.

Old guard vs. "new" members. I believe 6 of the 7 current cross-division rivalries would now be divisional games, with the remaining match-up being the left-over UVA vs. UofL non-rivalry.

At least for fan reaction on this board, it seems my guess was correct that CU fans may be unhappy.

Coastal
GT
Clemson
UVA
UNC
Duke
NCST
Wake

Atlantic
FSU
Miami
Pitt
Virginia Tech
UofL
Syracuse
BC

Outside of the Hokies and Cavs, is there a even a need for permanent cross-division rivals with this set-up? CU would probably ask for FSU if rivals were retained, but some of the other matches would really be stretching the definition of "rival".
