Are Curley Hallman or Gerry DiNardo still around? Would they be interested?

Seriously,

Unless LSU has a candidate waiting to sign on the dotted line, getting rid of Miles, who has been successful, is exceptionally risky.

The BR Advocate is now quoting other insiders denying the ESPN report about Miles's imminent departure:

Don't really know what will happen to Leslie Miles but if he is in fact let go, probably one of the decisions LSU will come to regret for a long time.

LSU seems to want Jimbo but i am not sure why. He was a good coordinator at LSU but as a head coach his claim to fame is that Jameis Winston was there for two years. Without Winston, he'd have nothing to show for his FSU tenure.

The real question is why Jimbo would want LSU. He has it easy peasy in the ACC.

Also, Jimbo is old. Old people love Florida.

You're welcome. 07-coffee3

They are playing Miles 15 million to get out of his contract, and then the school will be making excuses for raising the students tuition rates. Really sucks...

LSU's athletic department will have no problem with that money. Besides, it doesn't implicate tuition rates at all anyways.

LSU athletics gets zero dollars from student fees or subsidies.

I hope you are correct.

Just curious, why do you hope that? Mullen knows the area well now, knows the recruiting but will have a much better brand and program backing him up on that recruiting trail. Someone could argue that Mullen is better with QB's due to Prescott. Someone could also argue that he is a good coach that has gotten better than expected results from his program while Miles has slipped and doesn't deliver such anymore.

Mullen could be dangerous at LSU.
Yes, If he was at LSU he could recruit Louisiana better and I will agree that he coached Prescott well. But before Dak he didn't do much and his development of a defense has always been a little suspect. Although last year team was loaded. But that was mostly due to having an upperclassman led team. His recruiting is regional with little to no success in Florida, Georgia, and Texas and his over use of JUCO's is a little troubling. Maybe a lot of this gets fixed with being a LSU but I doubt it. I think he has a problem with high school coaches in the region.

This is a risky move, especially if the guy they wants don't come...and who that guy is can't be that much better. The powers that be should have told LM to hire a legit offensive coordinator that can coach up the quarterbacks.

I didn't know about the last part if it is true. If it is then that would explain why the guy would look at jobs like Virginia Tech and Maryland.

Also, it's not $15 million. Reportedly the contract says that LSU gets to pay his buyout in installments over 8 years and gets to offset Miles' future salary against what they owe him. In other words, they'll negotiate a lump sum settlement with Miles' representatives for a lot less than $15 million.

The talk of Jimbo was ridiculous.

Nothing ridiculous about that talk, I'm sure Jimbo used it to squeeze a few more $$$ out of FSU before making that gushing statement about how much he loves being there.

As for Miles, his record is very much like that of his mentor, Bo Schembechler, and the Michigan program in general. Over the long haul, Michigan has as impressive an overall record as anyone - most wins, second best winning %. But historically, at least in my lifetime, their program is marked more by "consistently very good" performance rather than great performance. Michigan is always good, but they've won 1/2 of a national title in the past 70 years.

Likewise, Bo's overall record at Michigan was fantastic. In 21 seasons, he won fewer than 8 games only once, never had a losing record, and won 10 games 11 times, back when winning 10 games was a real mark of an excellent season. And yet, he was 2-9 in major bowl games and never won a national title.

Similarly, if you look at the totality of Miles's 11 years at LSU, it's a sterling record. But it's a record of a program with lots of 2nd and 3rd place finishes, not many 1st place finishes.

LSU fans are willing to risk becoming Nebraska rather than go 9-4 every year and watch players who were 4- and 5- star recruits have pretty good careers at LSU and then go on to become stars in the NFL.

In the end, I can never blame a fan base for having higher aspirations. 07-coffee3

Yes you can blame them. There isn't a history by which to base these lofty expectations upon. If not for Saban, this wouldn't even be a legitimate conversation.

You sound like a bitter LSU hater. What did they do to you?

Nope, just an impartial observer whose team is just now getting out of the wilderness after firing Fulmer.

If LSU waits to fire him until January 1st, the buyout falls to $12.9 million.

And yes, since the payout is over 8 years, LSU can pay a smaller lump sum now. But not because Miles will negotiate away a cent of what he's owed - he won't - but because of the time value of money.

Your bad experience with Fulmer isn't a reason to chastise the LSU fan base for wanting more than what Miles has produced. There is no doubt that LSU is well aware of the experiences of schools like Nebraska and Tennessee, they have no illusions about that. They are, apparently, willing to take that risk, so what's to criticize?

RE: Les Miles' last game at LSU is tomorrow ...
My initial reaction to reports that Jimbo Fisher might be Miles' replacement was that would be two bad decisions in one - LSU's for letting Miles go and Fisher's for giving up an easier route to a championship for a lateral move. On further reflection, I'm not so sure it's all that far fetched.

It's hard to imagine LSU canning Miles without a solid replacement in their pocket. When you look at the current landscape, who else is there besides Fisher? He may well have established a relationship with key boosters during his time there as OC. He is in the process of a divorce, and might be looking for a change of scenery. And just maybe he is growing tired of hearing FSU boosters complain about being stuck in the ACC.

I wouldn't rule it out. And if Saban were to decide to move into his Austin retirement home a little sooner than planned, Fisher might see a chance to establish LSU as the SEC West kingpin in the near future.

Stranger things have happened.
