Punting situation
Coach Carey,

Please pursue a new punter. The current one is awful.

Thanks,

KLAKE87

I think you mean awful. Aweful would mean the opposite.

There has to be someone on the university...maybe soccer that can kick better than the guy doing it now. He's probably the worst punter we've ever had.

Coach Carey, PLEASEEEEE let Chris Nendick help get you some quality kicker/punters, hes been begging to help for years! Been working for Chris Sailer, one of the top kicking coaches for years and has been personally training some of the best HS kickers/punters across the country

A punter/kicker should be a top priority. We need help and fast in that area. We also need a center who can properly snap the ball.

You would think after 54 starts he could elevate the ball above the QB's shoelaces.

You would think after 54 starts he could elevate the ball above the QB's shoelaces.

The extra time and effort it takes to recognize a low snap and then react by bending to get it takes away from the QB's efficiency. Plus, it increases the risk of fumbled snaps. I think we've seen a few of those.

What puzzles me is that Carey was a center and should have worked with Ness until he got it right. If he did and Ness just couldn't get it, he should have been moved to another O-line position.

RE: Punting situation
But the weird thing is Ness has been more than fine snapping the ball before this year...so, unless the coaching just turned crappy this year?

As for the punting, man is it bad. And it looked extra bad when you saw a GOOD punter on the Ohio side. You could make a pretty easy case that was the biggest difference in the game, because field position controlled the game and kept us locked down.

I remember that Ness had problems last year too.

Some, but the 2 years before that? He's started 50+ games...for the vast majority of them, there haven't been no issues. I don't know why it's changed, but he hasn't always been like that.

Even when our punter was kicking WITH the wind he still couldn't get good yardage.

Good punting is not something that can be overlooked. Field position matters.

An issue on which there should be no controversy; a new punter has to be a top priority! A good punter can flip field position. Considering how animated was with Ambrose several times I doubt he will miss this one!

RE: Punting situation
I think that NIU needs to look into offering a football scholarship to an elite and talented New Zealander/Australian or South-African High school rugby punter.

As for the present situation, if we have any elite punters on the NIU rugby team, it would be time to have them walk on in Detroit.

I know it was his first every college game let alone start BUT that his bad snap in the 2012 Iowa game cost us the game.

Ness always snapped the ball low. Either Lynch was fine with it or he preferred it that way. Lynch always had to reach down and get it. But he was expecting it to be low so he had fewer problems with it I think.

I agree on the punting situation, as Barkley would say, it's turrible.
