Kent State @ Pittsburgh
The Flashes head down 76 to take on the undefeated Panthers on Saturday. Pitt is 3-0 with wins over Cornell (93-49), Detroit (93-49) and Saint Joseph Indiana (84-43). Based on those numbers alone, it looks like Kent State is going to have shoot a decent percentage from the floor to make a game of this one. Obviously, poor defense will lead to Pittsburgh running the Flashes off the floor, but Pitt is going to get theirs at times.

Although they haven't been forced to shorten their rotation, Pitt has a dozen players averaging double digit minutes. Six of those players, led by Michael Young, are putting up 7+ points per game. Young is scoring 16.3 points per night on 63% from the field and 78% from the line. The 6'9 product of Saint Benedict's in New Jersey is also averaging 9 rebounds per game. Young was honorable mention All ACC last season. In short, he is a beast!

The second leading scorer is another junior post. 6'7 Jamel Artis is scoring 14 points and averaging 4 boards per game. This will be an interesting measuring stick for KSU. Just how tough is the veteran front-court? If Hall, Spicer and/or Ortiz gets into foul trouble is their anybody on the bench who can defend? Can the guards take care of the basketball?

Big Boy Basketball on Saturday!

Pittsburgh shooting 64% from the field (including perfect from beyond the arc) and leads the Flashes 42-32 late in the first half...Kent State back to back possessions with missed layups.

Played pretty well in the first half. Would have liked to have gotten a few more stops, but the effort is there. If we play this hard in conference play, I forsee good things.

A technical on the head coach and the best player with a flagrant to start an otherwise close second half. If the Flashes unravel like this in conference play...

Tip of the cap to the second half effort. Looking forward to next weekend's game at the Q vs. Cleveland State. The Vikings will be on the BTN tonight vs. Maryland. Between that and Stow vs. Saint Edward it should be a nice TV night.

We played great. Pitt made a lot of shots. We protected the ball very well and took the game to them on the boards. Had some chances late, but just couldn't get over the hump. Love the effort and so far, love this team.

With you on this one. Good job of coaching and good effort. It was almost a mid season performance. I think I am going to like this team a lot.

Probably the most satisfied I've been after a 9 point loss. I think this game proved that our interior game is legit. Normally when we play a school from a bigger conference we need to live on the 3 ball and get dominated inside. This game was exactly the opposite. Pitt shot 62.5% from 3 compared to 30% for us and they shot 92.9% from the line. Normally that's a recipe for a MAC team to get blown out against an ACC team. Also, with the exception of the Southern Illinois game our free throw shooting looks it's fine. 85.7% in this one. The Youngstown game was 60% but the Marist and St. Francis games were over 79% and 71% respectively.

The one concern I have with this team, right now, is their ability to defend on the perimeter. Good jump shooting teams could give us some trouble. Every team has problems at this point in the season though and I don't see this as one that can't be corrected. We've got too many athletes and too much length to not be able to get hands in the faces of jump shooters.

One last comment, I was disappointing that Sendy and Hall lost their composure tonight. I thought the officiating seemed fine so no need to get a statement tech. Since they didn't actually show what Sendy did maybe it was a quick trigger. Hall's was really bad because in addition to the 2 points it gave Pitt the ball back. At the end of the game we were down 7 with 1 minute to go, I couldn't help but thinking those 4 points and extra possession we gave them were huge.

Yep. Six gift points right there. Temper tantrums in a tight game = inviting trouble.

Shows two different sets of eyes can see different things. I thought Pitt made a lot of contested shots from the perimeter. IMO, it wasn't that we weren't defending or defending poorly. Kudos to them for that. Also, the free points were huge, but it's impossible to say how that affected the result at the end.
