dayum.....you just described ray guy in real terms......

and both he and ray could also pound a golf ball into another plane of existence (ray did it with a ben hogan speed slot version) .....both were equally impressive to enjoy company....

it's just dadgum cool to have enjoyed participating with some amazing athletes at various points in my life.....it's really the best of living in a simple rural area after leaving the shithole of urbanites....

the trials and tribulations of 'brett' are what embodies all of us.....he just took it to a level he never knew existed.....he did pretty dayum good in totality.....

Yeah, right, Stinky. And I was drinking buddies with Don Maynard.

it doesn't matter if you believe me....just like (to me) it doesn't matter what you believe in...but I respect yours

what you don't understand is what it's like to grow up in a small town and play golf with the rich fellers.....things just happen

ray's ball striking is legendary at HCC pal....and I grew up there....you don't come with "ben hogan speed slot" w/o knowing what that means in real terms....that fellow could effortlessly fly a 3-wood 280 back then..... as a kid I was in awe the first time I got paired with him in the 'money game'.... it was then I understood how good of a person that Guy really was

brett just liked to whip it out off the green and fertilize with beer piss and then pound another one(s) off the next tee...this was back in the '80s when we were all just avg college folk....and that's a tame story from the goat ranch days (the old southern miss course that no longer exists)

you have no clue what you are talking about....

Stink, I guess that some folks are not used to their sports heroes being just plain ole down home country guys who mix with the rest of us common folk. I met Ray Guy on the Sunday before the first day of classes in September of 1969 on the steps of Hattiesburg Hall (girls Freshman dorm). I was there to pick up my date who has been my wife for the past 42 plus years, and he was just hanging around talking to the Freshmen girls. Still see him a few times a year around the 'Burg or on the Gulf Coast. He is just one of the guys (pardon the pun).

Know many of Brett's family members. I have met him a number of times, some while we were sharing a cold adult beverage. While he was playing, there was a bar in The Kiln, the Broke Spoke, that he frequented. During the winter, after the season, snow birds from Wisconsin and the upper midwest used to come down and hang out there just to see him and get a chance to drink and talk with him.

BTW, you should have seen Ray hit a golf ball in the 1970s using persimmon head drivers and steel shafts. He could just about hit it as far as he did with those ridiculous oversized titanium head and graphite shafted clubs of today.

hence, the ben hogan speed slot reference.....persimmon was the only thing we had back then.....they made fun of me when I busted out the first taylor made metal with the allen nut in the sole....

it was the '70s when I first met Ray......

and yes, you are right....they don't understand what small town living is like for some....

great stories we have.....and they're nothing more than good ol' boy stories with good ol' boys.....

RE: OT: Brett Favre
My father thinks Ray Guy is one of the best players ever. He grew up a Raiders fan and was thrilled when Ray Guy was finally placed in the HOF. My mother grew up a Vikings fan, well mostly a Fran Tarkenton fan. It is funny, I'm a Raiders fan now since I picked Derek Carr to root for after Favre retired and I was a Vikings fan when Brett was there.

Life is funny and cyclical.

Stinks telling the truth.
Years ago I took my bil to play. We get to the tee box and he looks over and sees Brett. "Damn. Thats Brett Farve!" Yeah. A couple of holes later he says "is that Bobby Collins? (My bil lives in Tx) Yes I say and do you recognize who is playing with? "Oh crap, thats Ray Perkins!" Yeah. Later we saw Ray Guy but he did not recognize him.
Two future HofFs and two nationally known coaches at one place on just another day.
On a side note, I saw Brett in the club shop on his off week during the season one year. Didn't play with him much (to big of a money game) but we had played a few times together. I went over to say how ya doin' and looked down at his leg. Holy crap I said. What the hell happened to your leg? "Oh its just a little bruised" he says.
I kid you not, his leg was BLACK from his knee to his ankle socks. Unbelievable he could play with that.

he's one tough fella....not one 'fear bone' in his body....

both ray and brett define what it's like to be a southern miss fan in all forms of 'play'....they define good people....

and ray perkins' house is a lateral hand toss off the 5th tee.....lol.....

I know, I know…I was just giving ol' Stinky a little bit of ribbing. Personally, I could give a hoot about these "famous" people and/or if they're down to earth. If I see someone who is considered famous, et.al. I give them their space. I don't fancy rubbing elbows with anyone, it's not my thing.

But, to each his own.

Just curious, who would some of UTEP's most famous former players be?

I only remember the best one. A Hall of Famer, Don Maynard. Younger guys with younger brains can remember more…wait, how about Tony Tolbert who played for Dallas many years and has one (?) Super Bowl ring, maybe two. Jesse Whittenton who played for the Packers. C'mon Miners, help me out.

Thing is, if you go to an Eagle function of any kind, Ray is likely to be there. Gary Grubbs (look him up - you'll recognize his pic) is likely to be there. Clarence Weatherspoon is likely to be there. And they are basically "just one of us". They don't act any different. We are all Golden Eagles.
I looked up from my pharmacy counter several times to see Brett Favre waiting to drop off a prescription for a family member. He doesn't know me from Adam's house cat, but he was always friendly.
Southern Miss is just a different kind of place.

Now, that said, people like Tim Floyd, although his dad coached for years at Southern Miss, and he grew up in Hattiesburg, most decidedly does not act "just like one of us."
He tends to be on the bitchy side.

Did not know Maynard was a Miner. I am old enough to have enjoyed watch him catching passes from Namath.

I submit Ken Heineman as a candidate.

Funny thing is the Wrangler commercial, outdoors in his field, stereotypical Mississippi isn't really an act. He even can be seen mowing his own lawn from time to time at his house outside of Hattiesburg.

Hell, i've seen him mowing the median on 98 with a bush hog bc the county hadn't cut it yet.
