RE: UAB engineers to unveil new helmet design
Additional safety is always a worthy goal, but a helmet isn't ever going to prevent concussions in football any more than a fancy bumper on a car will keep passengers from flying through the windshield during a crash.

No, but a seatbelt generally does.

RE: UAB engineers to unveil new helmet design
should've just asked woody harrelson....
seriously, any design change that can help minimize the impact of head trauma should be welcomed by all.....I could easily see a dual liner system similar to the safer barrier in nascar become the standard moving forward.....honestly, I don't understand why it has taken so long to make significant changes to help with this issue...
another interesting thought would be to increase the weight of the shoe and/or pads to slow the players down....this is a multi faceted issue that should be looked at from a variety of perspectives....limiting acceleration should also be part of this focus
they're just too big and fast....there is a reason they run restrictor plate races at some tracks....

Probably didn't help that the NFL was covering up the impact of concussions for years.

there is no doubt how poor the NFL has posited from an ethics perspective.....people should be in freakin' jail.....it's disgusting what they get away with.....it's why I rarely watch the NFL....P5 college ball is right on their heels now....

Exactly. Now, if somebody can figure out the equivalent of a brain belt to keep it from jiggling around inside someone's skull when their fast-moving head comes to a sudden stop, then we'll be in business when it comes to reducing football concussions.

and that's the point.....it's easily more involved than the helmet.....somehow, the speed of the player needs to be reduced....weighing down the feet and/or pads would help tremendously...somehow, the players have to be slowed down
football did just fine when a 4.6/40 was fast for RBs and LBs were around the 5.0 mark...
today's players are just too big and fast
rules changes regarding tackling (yes, stricter ones need to be developed IMO....zero tolerance on lowering ones head in the open field has to happen), and reducing player speed also need to be addressed....we all know players aren't going to get smaller
here's a decent article from '13 that sums it up nicely.... http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots...-dangerous
