QB Run
I almost get it when Jordan Lynch was here that he didn't mind getting tatood and running for a first down, but I remember cringing and wondering when that day was that he wouldn't get up from those hits. Now we have two freshmen who are not Jordan Lynch in speed size or agility and we keep those same QB runs. These guys are also being tatood and in Grahams case out with an injury. Our QB is the most important position on the offense but we treat him like a rag doll. When is someone going to go to Carey or Cole and tell them to get rid of the Lynch plays and treat these kids as pocket passers and teach them to slide properly when running or go out of bounds to avoid the hit. We are down to 5th string and I don't want another injury.

RE: QB Run
The QB power provides such an advantage because of the numbers mismatch it creates. If it's part of your playbook and system, than you continue to recruit to it. Which we have.
Yes, there are inherent risks in that philosophy, but it's been pretty damn good to us. Criticizing it now seems a little hypocritical.
For the record, we've never had a QB injured on a designed run. Hare was a flukey Non-contact, Graham was a sitting the duck in the pocket on a pass play. You are much more prone to injury as a thrower than you are going downhill as a runner.
I do think we needed to scale it back with the lack of depth we had at QB, but I'm not going to argue keeping it in there...it's who we are and the kids we have are built for it.

RE: QB Run
QB run didn't get Graham, Maddie, Hare, or Santa hurt. That's your list of banged up QBs. Maddie had back problems. Hate blew his Achilles while back pedaling from a snap. Graham got smoked because his RB couldn't block. No clue what happened to Santa.
QB play is part of the reason NIU lost last night, but Graham is at best a 3rd string QB RIGHT NOW. There were other reasons NIU lost. Bad O-Line play, blown defensive assignments, bad QB play, and the coaches didn't adjust well enough to Solichs plan.

Nobody is mentioning bad D-line play. Their QB had all day to throw - no pressure whatsoever. And we were gashed by their running game giving up 4.6 yds/carry.

Hare was hurt in a run play. He was attempting a QB draw. It was the change of direction from dropping back to springing forward to run that snapped his Achilles. But I'm all for the QB run. It's a big part of their offense and very effective. Its all about when to use it.

There is a reason they don't use it as much in the pro game. You don't need your QB getting hammered each play. A QB run should be part of our offense but not to the level where we run it 1-2 times a drive.

RE: QB Run
In the pros the defenses are just too fast and large. Plus, they're counting on their QB to be around 5-7 years. In college, Unless you have a Lynch type body, I think you need to run it just enough that defenses have to worry about it.

well he blew the achilies taking the step forward, after the dropback, to start the designed run. Non-contact but it was a designed run.

Yep, all those run for 4-5 yards right up the guy all night? that's big Corey's bread and butter. We weren't deep enough there, and you could gang up on William Lee.

Don't forget their tight end dropped a sure touchdown and they had another pass play that beat the DB was overthrown.
Defense was garbage last night.
I am sick of 3rd and 9 or longer and they convert.
I would give the defense a D last night.

RE: QB Run
It's always easy after injuries to say "You shouldn't have done the thing that got so and so hurt."
Injuries are a part of football. Especially at QB. Mike Martz got his QB's killed with deep drops and maximum targets. There's no safe place on that field.
NIU's offense needs to the run the qb. That's a huge part of it. Just have to live with the risk.

Same. They had some big stops that helped us win against Toledo and WMU (and at one point WMU had triple our t.o.p. but they still didn't give up), but man they sucked last night. We got absolutely ZERO pressure from the d-line. It looked like Ohio was blocking four puppy dogs trying to break through. We got better penetration against Ohio State, but get stone walled by the mighty Ohio Bobcats? Really?
And I know its easier to find targets when you have all day to throw, but damn if it didn't seem like every time they hit their man, our nearest defender was 10 feet away. Granted you got a couple of close picks, but then they'd go right back to giving up huge chunks of yardage on the next play.
I don't know, honestly we've had so many close games in the past that we somehow came out on top its just expected that we pull it off every time. If Toledo wins, which they likely will, then maybe we can make a decent showing in our bowl game and come back reloaded for another MACC run next year.
