a different take on the whole mascot thing
Some students do not believe a white European man is a good representation of their school

Quote:“I think this mascot also reflects a sort of hyper masculine, hyper violent sort of image which is doubly problematic,” said communications studies professor Michael Karlberg

Someone will have a problem no matter what is used. Other than possibly giving them a box of tissues, why don't the rest of us ignore the whiny *******. Their problems. Why do we let them make 'em our problems.

This^^^in a nutshell is what we have to do. Trouble is, everyone not us, is afraid of being labeled.

If having the Viking mascot is honoring white Viking stuff then just change it to Indians so they'll be honoring Indian stuff instead.

Oh wait. I forget. There is no logically consistent and intellectually honest methodology for determining which mascots are offensive and which aren't.

Why is it that 1/2 of 1% of the student population is setting the agenda for universities and colleges?

Not many people talk about the extent of the inter-tribal massacres that took place amongst the Noble Savages. The indigenous populations, of North and South America, were very fond of murdering their neighbors, enslaving the survivors, and ritual torture. This was well before Europeans arrived in the Americas.

I've long argued that the Redskin mascot is an honor 'hail to the Redskins' not an insult.... yet we seem to be a culture of people who simply want to be offended so we can blame THAT for our poor lot in life.

Vikings were fair skinned... hard to get around that.

If the guy is concerned about 'hyper-masculine', hyper-aggressive', I guess we can't even be broncos or mustangs as they are all depicted with some sort of 'aggressive' tinge. In the future, 'My Little Pony' will be the mascot depicted for any team with a horse-related mascot.

I agree that ignoring them is the best way in a lot of situations. As I've said before, there are a lot of people that would be nobodies if their opposition simply didn't acknowledge them.

I disagree that the trouble is that people are afraid to be labeled. It's just that complaining about the issue to like minded individuals gives both a sense of belonging and a feeling of importance. That's why we post on message boards in the first place.
