MyBB Josh Pastner Honestly Has NO Clue
Watching his post game presser.

Keeps saying "gotta make shots" and "they make them in practice."

Just the same stuff.

Last night:

Pastner: "I'm just telling you, from our practice, Ricky Tarrant makes them all.."

From August:

Pastner: (on Ricky Tarrant) "He needs to be a really good shooter for us. I think he's a better shooter than his career 3-point percentage (32.5). He's really shot better from 3 than he's shown in his past based on his percentages from his summer with us. "

Tarrant's previous three years' 3 pt %:
2011-12: 34.4%
2012-13: 32.4%
2014-15: 29.9%

First three games at Memphis:
3-14 21.4%

Last night:
1-7

There are NO historical metrics that indicate Tarrant will ever be a good 3pt shooter. Even the beginning of this year, he has not been good. Last night, he went 1-7.

He was getting to the lane with ease and getting fouled almost every time he drove. And he is an excellent ft shooter.

Yet Pastner keeps up this insane notion that Tarrant will simply "turn into" a good shooter.

During that entire post game presser, he might have mentioned the word defense one time. The great coaches realize no matter how much shots don't fall, defense is still a way to win games.

Pastner is just the opposite. Blame offense for not winning.

Memphis was up 55-53 at 4:11 minute mark.

In the next eight UT-A possessions, they scored on SEVEN of them, including five field goals. No turnovers.

That, plain and simple, is why Memphis lost.

Make a stop on defense. Don't give up offensive rebounds.

But no, boy wonder wants to talk about "shots not falling."

Utterly clueless.

Utterly clueless, yep, but damn near an understatement. Delusional may be it as well. It is baffling how bad he is.

Yup.

Everyone makes them in practice.

Ever seen the end of the bench guys shooting around before an NBA game? The all drill them.

Probably because he doesn't stress defense in practice.

The players don't know what to do in game situations when a defender is actually guarding them.

Tarrant was, to be fair, our only good shooter from the line though. If I'm correct he was 12 for 12.

I'm not trying to single out Tarrant. He was exceptional at drawing contact. Seemed to be able to get to the line at will.

Which underscores the idea that the HC should have ordered him to keep driving and not settle for low % 3 pointers.

Just that Josh thinks he can "imagine" a player to become better. Too much of that Graber mindful nonsense. "See the ball. Be the ball."

Tarrant has the purest free throw stroke of any player i have seen in a while at Memphis. Why you don't take advantage of that with an offense geared towards him driving and drawing fouls is beyond me.

RE: Josh Pastner Honestly Has NO Clue
Early in the 2nd half, Memphis went on an 18-5 run where the Tigers made ONE field goal. 15 of the 18 points were on free throws.

UT-A had 11 possessions and scored on two of them.

Memphis "making shots" had zero to do with that run.

When a team is reeling in foul trouble, you TAKE IT TO THE RIM!!! He should have taken anyone out that shot a jumper. especially a 3ptr.

And yes. Makes some stops and get the rebound then you won't have to rely on something you can't do.

I'm amazed at how many D1 and NBA (Grizzlies) players that cannot hit a wide open shot. 03-banghead

Haha.

At the end of that long run, Woodson hits a three to put Memphis up 50-44 to cap off a 23-7 run.

Mind you, that means Memphis has scored 15 of 25 points on free throws. UTa was relaxing their perimeter defense so as not to foul.

Memphis then takes six three point attempts in their next eight shots...going 0-6 from three in the process and watching UT-A outscore them 22-11 in the next 10 minutes.

Buddy, the thing you ignore or fail to realize is that if they would've made all those three pointers they would've blown out UTA. This is on the players for jacking up shots and not making them.

Coach P has already told us exactly what this team needs to do to win - make shots - a fact you conveniently keep glossing over.

They make shots, they win. It's that simple.

No point beating the same drum. Josh is not fit to be a Div 1 coach at a high level program as Memphis. We all know that, and now it's just a matter of the season playing out and hopefully we can have a replacement next season.

There are just so many glaring holes in his coaching that it is unreal 7 years later he is still at the helm coaching this team... It is equally unreal that after 7 years he has failed to make any meaningful or noticeable change to his approach...
