With Lynch to the NFL I wonder if quality coaches like Odom would hesitate? Otherwise I'm fully on board the Odom bus.

Losing Lynch hurts, but Brady Davis was a highly rated recruit. Can we keep the Keon Howard commitment? The next coach needs to have confidence in his recruiting ability. I think one of the factors pushing Fuente towards the door is he doesn't think he can sustain high level recruiting at Memphis.

Maybe --- but I think we all know the primary reason. If you're career minded and want to make a mark in college football --- you need to be at a decent P5 school.

Agreed. Which probably means that Fuente knows the Big XII invite isn't coming in a time frame that works for his career (if ever).

Not really. Even in the P5 we today we would not be considered a decent P5... Miami, VT, etc. are simply better jobs regardless of conference affiliation. Most people are simply not like Patterson at TCU...

As for Memphis, should Fuente move on, insiders tell GN to keep an eye on UAB coach Bill Clark, Missouri defensive coordinator Barry Odom and USC interim head coach Clay Helton. UAB’s program is on “hiatus” until 2017; Clark has been a college head coach for two seasons, at FCS member Jacksonville State in 2013 and at UAB in 2014. Odom is in his first season as Mizzou’s DC after serving in the same position at Memphis for three seasons. Helton also has Memphis connections; he was a Memphis assistant from 2000-09, serving as the offensive coordinator for the last three seasons. He has been at USC since 2010, first working for Lane Kiffin, then Steve Sarkisian.

You're right. It would take a few years, but less than a decade ago Baylor was the worst team in the country. The P5 money is huge.

Think about this fact. Memphis has a 50 million dollar a year athletic budget. Is building new facilities all the while getting a whopping 2 million a year from the AAC. With even a half share from the Big XII, the Tigers make huge strides.

With Lynch to the Pros, the BXII still undecided it seems, and an absolute ton of quality / P5 job openings --- now is the time for Fuente to make his move. As long as we follow Fuente with a decent hire (for example - Odom) I think we'll be fine re BXII.

Not that it means anything, but Clark signed a five year extension this year.

Wonder what the buyout is???? All I know about Clark is that he worked his way up through the HS ranks in AL and then had UAB doing well. He seems like a good fit for them.

Stoops had been in a rut for a couple of years and Patterson was troubling to score after moving from the BE to the B12.

If Odom wants to hire a progressive OC and leave him alone, I'd be all for hiring a defensive guy.

Rip Scherer was an OC.

You'll note I said "progressive" OC.

I wouldn't hire the OC from Iowa or New Mexico either.

Dumbazz

Prior to coaching at Memphis, he was the head coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA from 1991-94, during a time when the Dukes set or tied over 140 school records and helped them to a 10-3 record in 1994 and 29-19 record in four years.

Odom would keep some continuity and similar coaching styles. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Fuente would leave for the Virginia Tech job if we were invited to the SEC last week.

I wonder why? I see where its a better job right now and that joining the SEC would mean a steep learning curve for the program. I also wonder if there are things he doesn't like about the city, the school, the fans, or his bosses? Would be interesting to know.

Odom is young and he's been successful wherever he's been. He could be the next hot young coach.

Where HAS he been? What exactly are his credentials?
