Fleck-Spec...Speculation regarding the benefit of timing of his departure.
Yesterday on 96.1 (GR-ESPN Radio) they were talking about future coaching vacancies. These guys are not overly informed, but kept speaking of Fleck landing at various spots. They have no inside info.

With all the vacancies, and what not, I am starting to think this year would be a good year for Fleck to go, as the talent pool for available coaches to replace Fleck could be deep.

Hear me out, I have always been a fan of Scott Shafer (fired by Syracuse). If WMU was to offer him $800K a year, could we land him? I think we have set the precident with the Fleck contract (I realize it is booster backed).

I know some feelings would have to be healed. Perhaps Lester (Shafer's OC)? With the Syracuse fall out yesterday, I started to think of the possibilities.

Other than the fact Shafer was here previously, what is there to recommend him as our HC?

Moot point because it's highly unlikely Fleck will be hired away after this season.

I'd be shocked if PJ got another HC job at this point. 15-21.

When Cubit was ushered out the door, I thought that Schafer would be a good replacement. As I understand it, he interviewed but withdrew his name from consideration when he was hired as HC at Syracuse. Given his poor record there, why consider him now?

If Fleck were to leave this year it would be to a lower tier P5 that has no tradition of winning, however a 10 win season with a MAC Championship next year could put him in a much better situation.

Shafer or Lester coming in would be cool but I still hope Mike Hart or someone else is able to stay back and maintain the system should Fleck ever leave. It will be interesting to see what happens to the "Row The Boat" ideal and all the Row The Boat stuff we have painted everywhere.

Shafer did not get the 'Cuse job until Doug Marrone left for the Bills, which was weeks after Fleck was hired.

I thought I had heard that he withdrew his name from consideration prior to Fleck's appointment. Could well be wrong.

Id like to see Coach Hart get a shot at WMU as the head coach. He too has youth on his side and appears to relate well to the players. I think it would be a good post Fleck selection.Assuming Hart would want the job.

Just what we need - another HC with no experience even as a coordinator for OJT.

Well the precedent has been set. Hopefully this one isn't a narcissist.

What post?? (looking around)

And what's beneath the integrity of this board?? :) Rooting for ISIS or CMU [which are basically rival clans; whole other story] is about the only thing I can think of!

Reign yourself in Todd. That one goes a bit far.

Oh, come on, not too far as a joke. We all know they're not rival clans. :)

I deleted my post. It was in poor taste. At the end of the day, even if you dispise someone on a message board, there is a better than average possibility that in real life we could all have a jolly time...bring on the Hop Slam.

Yeah, I guess it's not cool to bash Lester. But hey, we can forgive him for not helping us hold on to that large lead against Marshall in the 1999 MACC game in the 2nd half. He DID make that comeback TD near the end to battle back. At the end of the day, I forgive him, and I blame our D for that loss. :)

*See? Deleting a post makes one rely on assumptions! :) I assume it's either PJ or Lester, but I go with Lester since I'm still bitter about that Marshall game (but don't blame him for it).

Not to mention that news about Lloyd Carr's grandson can really put things into perspective. Kind of like that girl Lacey who befriended that MSU player.

Bad news is bad news. But these stories involving little kids... Just a punch in the gut that sticks with me.
