The Russians have a proclivity for provocation not shared by the Turks. I wouldn't be surprised if they were testing just how far they could get into Turkey and got a nasty surprise.

Although Turkey recently had an election, it was pretty much status quo, so there would seem to be no need for the Turks to be going aggressor.

Airspace intrusions by Syrians and Russians been going on for months.

Given the navigation systems on modern tactical aircraft there's no reason it should have violated the Turkish Border

Turkey needs to prepare for invasion.

While the pilots were descending via parachute, the were both shot dead by Turkmen forces.


This is going to get ugly.

Time for some international apologies but little more. I just don't see Russia letting this get between them and a shift in focus by the West away from Russia.

Not good if true. I'm pretty confident Russia was ok losing a fighter to test Turkey's resolve, but shooting pilots in their chutes is a whole other story.

I surely hope that Turkey doesn't ask the US for help if Putin decides to lay the smackdown on them. They brought this on themselves, and they haven't exactly been friends of the United States for a good while.

I have friends from ECU who are living in Istanbul. They are considering coming back home for a bit to see how things play out.

Putin doesn't throw around idle threats like the petulant child occupying the White House. Turkey done F'd up.

On the audio you can hear one of the Muslims surrounding the downed pilot say "God is great."

Must be another one of those bad apples.

Turkey isn't a great ally, but they are politically and economically stable, much like Egypt was. They're important enough that the US will have to help. Hopefully it's helping to de-escalate the situation and not the other way around.

Why should American children be sent to die to defend the Turks from the Russians? We need to leave NATO before we get sucked into a tragedy. Frankly, despite NATO, I bet most Americans would back the Russians in this conflict.
