I'm sure they like it here fine. He just wants on a bigger stage and to be able to have a shot at playing for a National Title.

And it's a "safe" big time job. VT hasn't won big in a while with only FSU & Clemson to worry about year after year (& even Clemson might be an aberration). Other than a B1G job, it's probably the best "safe" P5 job in the country, lots of fan support & good (not great) recruiting base at an institution that isn't expecting a nat'l title or even a conference championship every year - but where either could happen.

This makes absolutely NO sense to me! If you look @ the r8ings of our games; The WIN over a team that beat BAMA @ HOME in the same season; ALL the media attention; Having 3-4 teams ranked in our conference; recruiting area that's smack dab in the middle of SEC! Memphis is a WINNER & has more going for itself this season (minus ALL of the VPI distractions) that tech has had in, well 4ever!

I don't understand this BETTER job crap! It's something underneath that is FORBIDDING LIL OLE MEMPHUS To be & become "THE KANG" there really needs to be some unearthing of facts....because to continue hearing US refer to others as BIGGER & BETTER is just disgusting. ...sounds like a loser mentality & it shouldn't be that way...

In the 50's Memphis was EVERYTHING that Atlanta,Chicago EVER was....what has happened that reduces our mentality today that WE AS MEMPHIANS feel or spew that we AREN'T worthy to be equal or better?

VT may have a BIGGER stadium; BIGGER(Only tix in town) crowds;More revenue from their Conference affiliations. .....But so does Ole Mrs! And I'm certain that WE would kik VT's arse, if there was a game played there or here...They are WORSE than Kansas.....Bowling Green would stomp their arse too....So would Navy;BYU;CINCY;@COOGS;TEMPLE

SO garsh-darnit! What's IS IT that I am missing if we will pay more$$$ & WINNING means everything! That chance seems gr8er here @ MEMPHIS! Just stay the coarse;keep recruiting;keep developing; Winning bowl games & Eventually, due to WINNING ,We eventually get in!

A couple loses to ND;DUKE;CLEMSON;FSU

NC;ECU;MARSHALL BGSU & This guy will be starting over from square one....In ANY "P5" these days! The margins for error are #RazorThin

You nailed it - Bigger stadium, bigger crowds, more revenue.

It's an opportunity to coach in a power conference, which is a step up in that profession...just like in the business world if you have an opportunity to go from middle management to partner with some stock options. Memphis could someday be in a P5 conference, which will level the playing field, but until then a head coaching gig at an ACC school is a move up.

RE: Forde: "betting the mortgage" on Fuente to Virginia Tech
VT is a good job, and unfortunately for us, a really good fit for Fuente and his ability of finding recruits who are not being correctly recruited.

VT is in the coastal side of the ACC. By being able to identify talent, he should have them competing for the coastal division title nearly every year, which means VT would be going to the CCG nearly every year, which means they would likely be in great position for a playoff spot nearly every year. There's very few teams out there that really have that possibility. Its almost more difficult right now to win the AAC west division than it would be the ACC coastal division.

WHY is it a good fit?
I'd say its a bad fit for ONE glaring reason.
Fuente has recruiting roots in Texas. That has worked for us because Memphis has been getting some Texas prospects for years now.
Think he'll convince kids from Texas to go to Virginia Tech which is even farther away?
I just dunno.

You don't really think Herman is "not pursuing a P5 job", do you? He has been pursuing one ever since he signed his UH contract.

I don't argue that VT is a better job than Memphis- I just think Fuente could have done better. VT is not a great job in my opinion. Plus, have you ever been to Blacksburg? It's not only not a great place to raise a family, it's hard as hell to get there. He could have landed in a better spot I think.

No it is a great spot for him..Again he will have a chance at the ACC championship every year which means a shot at college football playoffs. There are really only two good teams in the ACC(Clemson/FSU). Those are pretty good odds..Its a good job without all the pressure of a higher pressure school.

I think we could've had a chance at keeping him if one other thing outside our complete control would've materialized. Him leaving is probably indicative of the status of that IMHO.

Completely disagree.

No guarantee he will be successful there...and unlikely he will be highly successful right off the bat...but it is a great place, difficulty getting to it notwithstanding.

RE: Forde: "betting the mortgage" on Fuente to Virginia Tech
Fuente has a knack for identifying talent that gets looked over, which is something VT apparently needs. They dont need a recruiter, because it appears to be very difficult to recruit to VT if you believe whats been said recently. If thats the case, they need someone with Fuentes talent of identifying and developing talent.

Also, the fanbase is reasonable. Noone was calling for Beamers head, even though his past 3 seasons somewhat sucked. He was beloved there.

VT has won the ACC on more than one occasion with 3 losses. Hell, you cant even do that in the AAC. If you can keep your losses to one game in the season and win the CCG, you are in the the playoffs. Whereas that's true of any P4 team with a CCG, the teams that have the easiest route to pull that off are in the ACC coastal division.

Let's put it this way; Memphis OOC's schedule this year was more difficult than the ACC coastal division.

we can still get it with the right hire. I believe that is why the story broke that Fu had been offered north of 3 million...to show them that we are serious about football now.
