Eagles must fill gaps

By Alan Hinton
Hattiesburg American

University of Southern Mississippi defensive coordinator and defensive backfield coach Jay Hopson chuckled Sunday when asked if he had nightmares over realizing that two starters and a backup in the secondary would not play in the season opener due to dismissals or suspension.

Maybe it wasn't a chuckle, maybe it was a smile.

Maybe it was a wince.

"Things that have been done have been done for the best," Hopson said. "Sometimes you lose them with injuries, sometimes you lose them... you can't sit there and stress over it. You've got to get ready with the kids that are there."

Southern Miss players put on their uniforms for Sunday morning's Media Day, and many of the Golden Eagles and all their coaches spent a few minutes talking with journalists from around the state.

And one of the hot topics concerned the defensive backfield.
