Novak guy who is a great coach and was a big NIU guy and there during the building process. Still recruits Chicago well too. Would be a great option if Carey does leave

Yeah he had rough year, but from working with w him personally when he was at NIU, that guy is a tough, aggressive and passionate SOB. He's similar to Novak and Carey with the old school, no BS approach and has great ties in IL, WI and Florida. Hopefully we don't lose Carey and it doesn't matter, just saying that he is the type of guy that id want if we had an opening and I feel pretty strongly that he would be more than open to coming back here

This makes at least 12 openings in FBS. Lots of head coaches AND coordinators will be moving this offseason. If we win tomorrow I wouldn't be surprised if Carey is interviewing for something shortly thereafter.

Shafer fired at Syracuse
Shafer said his father was his greatest coaching role model. He noted: "My dad always said a good coach can coach any position, and a good coach can coach any scheme. We'll come up with an excellent scheme that is simple enough to let the kids attack and play with great aggression."[27] Shafer explained his defensive philosophy this way:

"Scheme is overrated, I've always believed that. What's not overrated is getting your kids to play with great effort, great attitude and great enthusiasm. Those are things we can control on a daily basis, and that will be my primary goal. . . . The philosophy of our defense is attack-oriented, attack and react. We want to be a defense this is multiple, that is always putting pressure and forcing the hand of the offense. We want to be a penetrating defense. If you're going to (ask) what our objectives are? The one thing we want to do is stop the run, force them to throw the ball on first down, create negative plays on first down . . . and get ourselves in position to force them to throw the ball. Get them one-dimensional. We don't want to be a defense that sits back. We want to be a defense that creates turnovers and scores touchdowns."[28]
Similarly, he told the Detroit Free Press:

"We're an attack defense; scheme is overrated. All schemes can work if you tackle and keep the ball in front. We're an aggressive defense, force the offense's hand. We're going to stop the run on early downs and force the pass. We'll get situations where when we are forcing the pass, we hit the quarterback, forcing him to throw the ball into coverage."[28][29]
Shafer's defense philosophy has also been published to DVD. He is the author of eight instructional videos that are distributed by Coaches Choice and teach lessons such as tackling, press coverage, and different defense packages.[30]

I would be good with him as our coach. I think Syracuse is s tough place to turn around and start winning, plus I think he is a great defensive coach. Also, his son could be a good addition to a local high school team at QB03-idea

As a DC if Niemann leaves? Yes.

Yes, Syracuse isn't a great stop, but I'll pass on a 13-23 record as a head coach.

Is there any reason to want him other than he used to coach here? NIU needs to stick with somebody who will run the same system they have now. Canada or even Niemann are better choices.

+1000.

I have a huge amount of respect for Joe Novak and what he did here. But, being an Asst. Coach under Joe does not mean that Shafer, Pittman, Narduzzi, Canada and others are the best candidates to be the next Huskie HC.

That quote right there likely means NIU wouldn't hire him.

I actually wonder if we will get additional recruits or transfers from Syracuse now that he is leaving. He used to steal a mess of players from the Midwest to go out there.

Me too.. Especially one who can't get to .500 in a weak conference.

Former WMU QB Tim Lester is the OC and likely will also be gone.

One of the Huskie Hansbro brothers is also an assistant.

December/January coaching carousel is going to be even wilder than usual.

+1. If we could get him as an assistant coach here that would be a good grab. Seems like he recruits the area here well and stole a couple from us over the last few years. Juwan Dowels, Kimble and another WR Winfield just on the top of my head that were pretty notable commits to our class.

I just think there's something to be said about guys who were here especially, under Novak, who get "The Hard Way" and are passionate about NIU. If they did hire Shafer, I'm sure Frazier would tell him the offense isn't changing and they would try to keep Bob Cole or someone else on the offensive staff as OC.

Who knows. I just thought he was a good guy to add to the mix bc of his experience here at NIU. Outside of him, you have Canada who I don't think has HC experience or Neimann who was a HC in D3 for 5 years.

Outside of those guys, we probably would have to look at someone outside of the program and you just never know how much the culture and attitude can change from that

Guess we'll see what happens. I for one hope Carey stays and we give him a raise

RE: Shafer fired at Syracuse
What about Shafer if #BobCole is still our OC?

I am not sure BC would really want to move right now. He has 2 kids in High School and that would be a tough transition for them.

Though going from $130k salary to $500k is a big enough reason for him to tell them to suck it up.
